Found this letter in an antique shop and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this particular town/village, or if any of the people named are still around.

Well, the gentleman himself is a Chaplain with a fairly specific name...I'm sure his service record could be traced.

I know but not telling as I have a dislike of the blue you write in:thumb2

I wonder what happened to him?

The letter addressed to him is dated December 21 (presumably 1942) and his date of death is listed as 1st February 1943. Maybe he died as a result of wounds received in battle before capture?

I wonder what happened to him too...
The letter was written 5th October 1942...in the letter the lady congratulates the Captain on his decoration ( must have been the M.C. he received) and enquires about his health and asks if he is comfortable....so he must have been wounded prior to capture.......

This is my uncle who i never met. I bear the same name as him. Before the war he was curate to St Mary's Norton. He was a chaplain with the 4th Battalion of the Green Howards and was involved in the evacuation at Dunkirk. He was captured in Libya where he was in the 8th army. No details have emerged as to the cause of his death. If you still have this letter i would very much appreciate seeing the whole draft of it....Derek Elliott

was only in johnstone the one time with an girlfriend visiting her brother. gardens full of bits of bricks and suchlike but house inside was tidy enough. so it would appear that it was a rough area 50yrs ago, can't say what it is like now.

It's a different spelling but if you google Reverend the captain DB Elliott there are a couple of links pertaining to him getting the MC in 1940, if it's the same chap

Hi Derek,
