Lifting a GS

Probably a stupid question but here goes

I have just got a bike lift for my Bonnie and HD and wondered if anyone had seen a cradle or similar used to enable you to safly pick up a GS from under the engine

Any ideas?

Most lifts of this type work by supporting the bike on the frame rails under the engine, we aint got non, so to speak

Through the hub paddock standard for the rear wheel and a short wooden plank and a car jack under the sump if your bike doesn't have a centre stand.

I'll use a car jack under the sump if I need to work on the front end - would be interested in a solution if you find one as I don't have the room for a full sized ramp unless I get rid of one of the bikes.

I just keep one of the bikes parked on the lift until I need it...bit of a pain moving stuff around occasionally, but worth in the long run....

The Big Blue and Eazy Rizer lifts use the footrests and a support under the sump/ bash plate. Just ask the manufacturer. They also have wheel yokes, but of course they wont let you take a wheel off using the lift.

I want one but not the expense.

The copies on ebay seem to be suitable only for sports bikes and don't lift as high.

Use the centre stand. This gets rear wheel off the ground. If you want to work on the front put some weight (ie bricks) in the top box or on the rear rack. That's what I do for wheel changing.

I have a center stand but the idea of the lift is to get the bike higher to make it easier.
The lift I have is an americana, and it lifts my HD about 2 ft of the ground with ease, so the idea is to try and use it on the GS.

I guess the bash plate should take the weigt of the bike, after all it you hit a rock hard the force would br heigher, but the mountings dont look that strong.

I will look to see if I can fabricate something

I put a plank of wood under bash plate and use van jack, no dramas at all so bash plate seems up to the job

I'm happy enough jacking up from underneath the bashplate if only lifting the front wheel a couple of inches - I really don't think I would trust those fittings if working on the bike 2' up in the air.

As the OP says its not just about changing the wheels. He wants to lift the bike to a comfortable working height. Table lifts will do the job but they take up space and get in the way. TBH the Eazy Rizer lift is about the same cost as a table lift.

The footrests will need special brackets and lock-down clamps, but are plenty strong enough to take the bike's weight. The weight taken under the sump is no more than 1/2 the weight of the bike. Probably a lot less.
