Linked brakes

p88 is just a blank page, 89 has accessories index :augie

Not in the 2008 GSA (you know, the bike the thread starter has?) manual it isn't.:comfort
Of course yours, being a different bike, hence a different manual, may well be, well, you know, different...

Well how was i supposed to know the manual was different? Jeeze.

You buy a car, same manual for all models. Some of us are new to bikes, try to remember that and not be so sarcastic :clap

Having the GSA as well myself I am not familiar with the GS manual, but assuming it is similar to the GSA one, just to keep you happy tunnie, I'd suggest looking for a chapter in the book entitled "Engineering Details". If it exists then hopefully there will be a section on "Brake system with BMW Motorrad
Integral ABS"
which will tell you all about how the braking fairies work.

They aren't the same models, hence they have different names, and manuals.

I didn't realise being new to bikes stopped you from being able to read an owners manual.
and not be so sarcastic :clap
Not a chance.:comfort

I'l take a look :thumb2

I have been riding how i was taught (just few months ago) when reaching a junction, i click down through the gears, braking with the rear brake, and applying a small amount of front brake, then more heavily with the front depending on speed.

Should i only be grabbing the front? I had an off in my early days of leaning when i snached the front, so i only pull it lightly with main braking done with engine + rear

You shouldn't be grabbing, anything.
I realise it's probably only a word, but even using the word means you are more likely to be grabbing rather than smoothly building up the pressure on the lever...

But yes, use the front brake and don't worry about the back for "general" braking (especially as yes, you do have linked brakes;)). The back brake comes into it's own at low speeds and on loose surfaces, plus a few other "specialist" applications such as mid corner tightening of lines etc.

If you choose to do any further training, you will also get taught it's advisable to brake first then change down rather than do at the same time, or change down to slow on the engine...

Cheers, never touched rear brake in corners yet!

Apologies for using 'grabbing' did read wrong when i read it back. I shall use the front brake for main use now then :)

You shouldn't need too to be honest.
Its really only a technique that a) needs using if you are going too fast into a corner on the wrong line (so go in slow enough and on the right line you shouldn't need to brake/change line) b) works better on some bikes than others and c) you don't really need on a GS cos a shove on the bars will get you around, and due to the funny front end you can brake using the front in a corner a lot easier than other bikes tho it's still best practice to avoid doing so.

usually i just close the throttle fully, i find its enough, the engine braking shaves off quite a lot of speed
