Liquid Cooled GS

Been long time coming.... It has apparently been in the planning since the development of the 1200 back in 02 and was planned for the "big release" 2010 model year as twin cammed water cooled and that was the plan as late as 08. Don't actually know what happened, I speculate either stumbled on development time/issues or the existing package was selling so well that they could prolong the model lifespan by drip feeding the bits slower (like Porsche has been doing with the 911 as te water cooled development mules were ready in one way or another since the early 90s only to see the light under the "996" guise in late 97).
The bottom line is that the Queen of Adv bikes keeps needing more power in order to fend off increasing competition from ever more reliable shops like Ducati (who would have thought that in 1999 eh?), new bikes coming from Honda on the category (abt 17 years late - and no the Varadero does not count as its a shed and always have been- but as we say better late...) and generally the false perception that the buying public have that more power means faster at their idiotic control. But customer is king and customer wants more... "150bhp that what we want Sir".

Anyway, waffling aside, the only way to approach that sort of power is with more air, more fuel, higher revs, bigger heat sinks, i.e more energy in, more energy out & more energy wasted (as heat) = watercooling

Once again the identical issue Porsche faced 18 years ago (whilst at the brim of bankruptcy) with their aircooled 3.6 boxers.

The new engines (given the fact the current ones are safely rated to 120bhp, maybe more) should be able to make 30% more pretty much on thermodynamic efficiency alone.

I reckon they ll push them out at 135-138bhp and keep another 20 odd safely in the bag for later generations or the odd HP3-4 etc...

Oh they will be much quieter too (better for me, i.e less tractor like) and torque should be able to flat top at the current top level for at least 1500 revs as I suspect they ve kept strokes the same.

Can't wait actually to pay 15k same time next year and embark in a 3 year development role for their brilliant but doubtless not finished article my friends!

Should mean some low mileage 2010's at bargain prices as the fashion-brigade all swap for the latest and greatest.

I rode the Multi-strada and bought a GS, power is not everything, and in fact the one thing I was trying to avoid, a 150BHP GS is not much better for my licence than the bloody ZZR was - own goal IMHO.

Better torque, less noise, maybe another 10-15BHP to help with two-up overtakes sound ideal to me - Oh, and no FD / EWS / FPC f*** ups.

Will Leon be racing it this year???

TwinCam GS's are so 2010................:blast

How inferior will they be to this new marvel:eek:

Completely obsolete, I can offer £2k for a decent 2010 model if anyone wants to recoup some cash before they become utterly worthless.

It just dawned on me the significance of the ports being top and bottom instead of front and back. It lets them run the cams as they are just now on the 2010 but lets them get rid of the horrible design of rockers and shims and go directly to cam on bucket and shims. No more 6000 mile valve checks! The modern age truly comes to the boxer.
