List of checks to be done on collecting a 2014 GS WC

I expect this will be the new Adventure model-mostly bought by people who like to think of themselves a tough adventurous types but who won't venture further than the end of their road without consulting at least 4 weather websites and getting written permission from mum.

It has always been the case that one should temper the excitement of getting a new vehicle with a little caution. But a list like that, really? Bloody good way to piss off the dealer by going through that list, especially as most of it is based on hearsay and posts on forums such as this. Check for things that are difficult if you have to take it back, scratches and other marks for instance. This sort of thing can cause a problem if you go back two days later with a scratch the dealer might not believe that it was there when you collected it.

You do a check anyway before the days ride don't you so just do the same-tyres, lights etc do they all work? If there are any issues later the dealer will sort it (assuming he is not still pissed off!)

An adventure is 3000 miles round the alps in 9 days on an S1000rr John ;-)
Next time you see me I'll hopefully be on a new GS mate!

I look forward to that, are you swapping the S1000rr for the GS or keeping it?

Don't forget to take an endoscope so you can examine the quality of the casting inside the wheels :thumb2

Some of it is absolutely shocking!

EDIT....bugger, was beaten to it, didn't read :blast

just shows how critical it is though :)

Yes John, just trying to work a deal on a new one.
Got a little CB1000R for days out but that's not crossing and borders lol.
Hopefully see you in 2014 just trying to talk the lads into trip next year.
Keep the Strudel warm!

Jealous? or just tiny bollocks?

Neither I think (I haven't compared my tackle to many others so they might be tiny by comparison to yours) I do have a sense of humour though-you should try it some time.

I think you have all been jolly hard on the OP.

These are nothing more than problems, moans and outright dangerous faults that have troubled 1200 WC owners for several months. He is well advised to take care.

After reading so many stories on the potential faults, and i am collecting my bike this month (hopefully) maybe we can complied a list of checks for (others as well) when collecting a new 2014 GSWC.

I can only remember a few though:
- Check the distance of space between the fork and subframe. Possible unbalanced distance.
- Bolts at fork might be loose. Check bolts.
- Hose at radiator overflow top nipple. Possible missing hose.
- ESA Spring should be white according to press kits. But in some cases, the spring is black.
- Clutch and Shifting (mixed reports)
- Bad Switches issue (mixed reports)
- Speedometer in a impossible position.

Any thing else anyone might want to add to the list?

Check to see if front and rear wheel have been fitted
Check to see if engine is installed

FFS are you allowed out on your own??? :blast:blast

So , to summarise, ALWAYS check your ears are in fully working order before you leave the house. They are the most important part of any checklist.

Good luck...

What about the more important check of the space between the ears ?

Kick tyres in a Knowledgable way

get on it !
start it !
ride it enjoy it !

If it breaks take it back and post all your moans and complaints on here !

Yeah and sometimes the rear wheel hole isn't as shiny as it should be :D

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear:comfort

Yes, for a small fee I could hold your hand/s when you collect the bike . I have positive energy which I can transfer to you, hence your bike will have none of the problems listed/imagined/etc .

Where is Sin anyway ?

State not location?

Last new bike I picked up from a dealer only has 12psi in the front tyre, so carry a stirrup pump and a calibrated pressure gauge

List of checks to be done on collecting a 2014 GS WC ....

Don't go on a Saturday.
Don't go within a week of the 1st day they can release them, ESPECIALLY on the Saturday

Seriously, Most things that get missed in a PDI (like under-inflated tyres, bolts not torqued up to spec on bit that the dealer has to assemble out of the crate etc) will only be missed because of a silly time pressure put on to their heads by silly "MUST HAVE IT NOW!" people.

A quiet time of the week.....maybe Thursday late morning...take a day off (it's worth it isn't it?) and then you'll probably have a better chance of one of the (hopefully rare) PDI items being rushed, plus you'll have the whole of the rest of the day to go and bond with your new steed while all the cubicle dwellers are at work :thumb2

As amusing as the thread has been so far:rolleyes:, and yes it does seem like a daft set of questions, but the fact is that there are obviously some crap dealers out there that don't perform the most basic of checks before putting a brand new bike on the road.:rob:blast Anyone that's taken delivery of a bike with loose bolts, or missing hoses should be having serious words with that dealer, and/ or BMW UK.:rob

Most people on here would do their own checks on the bike, but there are some that aren't mechanically minded, and don't know one end of a spanner from the other (I don't quite fall into that category, before the comments:P).

So yes, what some consider as daft questions could actually help any non mechanically minded owners of a new motorcycle perform some basic safety measures, so I say keep asking the questions, even if they attract the odd piss take.:beerjug:
