Nothing like a bit of forward planning and with The Storm finished and ready for the trip I've been doing a bit of thinking and decided to start pulling some bits together for the next project, has to be Airhead based, have enough GS's so after a lot of consideration when I return from The Gambia I'm going to build a cafe racer!
Been on the look out for a suitable bike for the project, wanted a twin shock and preferably a post 81 with Brembo brakes, electronic ignition etc. Started looking a couple of weeks ago, found a few potential victims within budget some very tatty but was not in a rush, then this one popped up, did a deal and had it collected by my delivery guy John last Wednesday. It was delivered this morning.
1984 vintage R100 RS with 47000 miles, last owner had it since 1993 and used it regularly before laying it up in 2002. Had the frame stripped and powder coated, replaced brake lines with stainless all round, fitted stainless bolts, a new exhaust system and had been working up to having it repainted (it was described as needing painting) but for what I have in mind its perfect and the original complete bodywork, fairing, exhausts and rear shocks will be sold off to cover some of the project costs.
Bike fired up on the first prod of the button after adding fresh fuel, engine sounds sweet and all the electrics work which is nice.
Won't be starting in earnest until next year but will be pulling the heads off this week to arrange for hardened seats to be fitted and whatever valve work is needed, given the mileage and check the cylinders and pistons.
New bodywork is on its way and will be off to the paint guy, gives him time to prep and paint in what I think will be a pretty special finish.
On the shelf at the moment I've a set of Delortos a pair of Ohlins rear shocks, the old style alloy RS Airbox and engine cover and just waiting for a 37/11 bevel box to lower the gearing.
Can't wait.
