Nothing like a bit of forward planning and with The Storm finished and ready for the trip I've been doing a bit of thinking and decided to start pulling some bits together for the next project, has to be Airhead based, have enough GS's so after a lot of consideration when I return from The Gambia I'm going to build a cafe racer! :bounce1

Been on the look out for a suitable bike for the project, wanted a twin shock and preferably a post 81 with Brembo brakes, electronic ignition etc. Started looking a couple of weeks ago, found a few potential victims within budget some very tatty but was not in a rush, then this one popped up, did a deal and had it collected by my delivery guy John last Wednesday. It was delivered this morning. :clap

1984 vintage R100 RS with 47000 miles, last owner had it since 1993 and used it regularly before laying it up in 2002. Had the frame stripped and powder coated, replaced brake lines with stainless all round, fitted stainless bolts, a new exhaust system and had been working up to having it repainted (it was described as needing painting) but for what I have in mind its perfect and the original complete bodywork, fairing, exhausts and rear shocks will be sold off to cover some of the project costs. :augie

Bike fired up on the first prod of the button after adding fresh fuel, engine sounds sweet and all the electrics work which is nice.

Won't be starting in earnest until next year but will be pulling the heads off this week to arrange for hardened seats to be fitted and whatever valve work is needed, given the mileage and check the cylinders and pistons.

New bodywork is on its way and will be off to the paint guy, gives him time to prep and paint in what I think will be a pretty special finish. :augie

On the shelf at the moment I've a set of Delortos a pair of Ohlins rear shocks, the old style alloy RS Airbox and engine cover and just waiting for a 37/11 bevel box to lower the gearing.

Can't wait. :bounce1

Looks like a nice clean bike.

Hope you have plenty of bits left over for the masses:D

Ahhh well paint jobs a secret, decided just not telling. :augie

If I really wanted to wind you up I'd offer you custodianship of the Basic :jeiger

Looks great Rog'
One thing tho, before you wash it to death make sure that the speedo /Gbox gaiter is tight, use a small cable tie to make sure !!

Have sort of started a similar project with an R80. Undecided as to how far to go. Pillion peg/exhaust mounts should be cut off for aesthetics but that is crossing the point of no return! Do you modify the bike so it can be returned to standard or just go for it?

Would like to bend up an exhaust that runs under the seat a la R1100S -any hints on bending exhaust tube? Have a good mob here who can bend pipes up from drawings but this will be a suck it and see process. May cut and tack it then get them to bend up a copy.

Will watch your progress with interest :thumb

I dont know if you saw the post of my R100RS but it is a beginning of a cafe racer conversion. I heard that flatracer.com has good R100 cafe racer versions but I only have internet access at work and never actually managed to get on it because that site is blocked for some reason.

The bike you bought looks very nice... can not believe how well they keep.

You mention the brembo brakes... I have a 78 R100... would it be possible to install the post 81 brembo brakes on a 78 model?

Very curious to see the results.

Which will it be, Sir.................

Johnny B, all snowflake wheels [19"] were recalled........

That one you've pictured is an 18" R45 or 65 one which were never recalled and STILL do that :eek::eek:

EDIT I think the modified ones have a code on the rim, but I can't rember what it is now :rob :(

I would not trust any of them, 19"/18"/17"/16":blast......................next:augie

Any proper period 'Cafe Racer' has to have spoked wheels anyway:D

You have to swap the whole front end. If you fit a handlebar mounted master cylinder the ATE brakes works almost as well as the Brembo setup. The caliper pins siezing are the main cause of the ATE brakes not working correctly,

My 78 R100 has a Brembo front end fitted, works ok but I actually preffered the twin disk setup on my old 90/6 (this had a handlebar mounted master cylinder), there was a little more lever travel but the brakes had far more feel.

That's a fecking awfull looking thing

I never said pretty and I bet it rides as crap as it looks.......................those bikes were all taken to Garmisch BMW Days in 2007

Roger has weird taste anyway...........................he fitted a FJ1100 fairing to an airhead GS with a 41 litre tank..........:blast:blast:eek:

Well the reasons for retaining (I never fitted it originally) the FJ fairing have been documented at length on the Gambia on an Airhead thread, as that;s a separate thread altogether I don't intend to pollute this thread by going over them again.

We all have different tastes (thank gawd) I'll stick with what I've planned and retain the snowflake wheels, got loads of other bits to waste my children's inheritance on rather than ditching a perfectly good late model set of wheels that I actually like.! :thumb
