Loading maps to Quest is failing

I've just updated to V8 of City Navigator and duly planned a new route in Mapsource and tried loading the maps to my Quest from Mapsource.

Although the maps etc. all loaded OK it then displays a message in Mapsource saying "erasing previous map sets - this may take a few minutes". Well, it was sitting there for over an hour before I aborted.

Just tried it again and exactly the same thing has happened. The Quest appears to have the correct maps loaded but what is the implication of not having the previous map set removed?

On the 2610 there is the option of seeing what maps are loaded, and you can also chose which maps to display. I'd think that the Quest would be similar in concept.

Well, I got it wrong. The new maps aren't even loading.

Waypoints I put in aren't present and the routes I've created on the PC aren't in the Quest.

It appears to load everything but then hangs on "erasing previous maps".

So, any ideas?

Dick, this happened to me once i think, it was when I'd filled the unit up with too many maps and waypoints. I had to manually delete a load of waypoints off the unit first before it could automatically erase the rest of the maps when loading the new ones.

I'm pretty sure this happened and I didn't just dream it

Are you trying to load them from a laptop? If so check it isn't going into power saving mode during the process.

Hmmm...interesting Dick....my Quest keeps returning a failure to download Tracks at the moment....I'm very very close to the WP limit so Whatton's comment makes sense......thanks for bringing it up

Just had a flashback, it was routes that I had to delete, I'd got loads of routes loaded for my European trip and had never deleted them even after i'd removed the French and Italian maps

Deleted the lot - routes. waypoints, tracks etc. Still didn't feckin work and although I saved off all the data I can't feckin load it back in again so I lost the feckin lot. So I had no maps and no user data.

Then I remembered I also had V7 on the family PC so I've booted that up and that works fine so at least I've got maps back and I'll have to enter all my waypoints and system setup again (wish I'd thought of it before deleting everything). Bollox........

So now I've proved it's not the Quest, it is definitely something to do with V8 as V7 was working perfectly OK on my PC last week.

An email has been sent to Garmin.

I'll let you know what the outcome is.

At least you can visit them in Romsey to sort problems unlike some other systems. My Quest froze and at one time was telling me I was loading maps from my PC, and I thought I was riding my R100GS! garmin gave me a brand new unit. I use the quest with an autocom, but then I always did like a woman to tell me where she wanted to be taken.

Well, Garmin haven't replied to my email from 17/5. I've given up trying to get through on the phone and I can't afford the time to go to Romsey.

Still can't use V8 that I've paid for!

Well, three suggestions:
1) Given that you've deleted all of your user data, if you perform a master/factory reset, you're not going to lose any data anyway, so it's worth a try. Elsinga has detailed instructions here:

Note: You will lose all user data, including maps, waypoints, settings, and everything else!

2) Second suggestion: If it works fine with CN7 but not CN8, ar you sure you have the correct unlock codes? You can install CN8 without the correct unlock codes, and then have it fail when copying maps to the GPSR.

3) What version of the firmware do you have on the Quest?

Thanks for the suggestions.

1. As I've already deleted the user data and it didn't help it's probably not going to help delete it again.

2. Unlock codes must be OK as I couldn't get into V8 without getting the codes from Garmin.

3. Firmware is 3.4 so it's possible it needs a later version although I've not seen anybody else report the same problem.

I reckon it's most likely a issue with Win98 and I'm hoping Garmin decide to live up to their generally positive customer service reputation and come back with a solution.

You're probably right. Win98 may be at fault (although why it works fine with CN7 and not CN8 is unusual).

The purpose of the factory reset is not to delete all user data, but to restore the Quest unit itself back to factory default settings. I would still give this a go.. I only mentioned the deleted user data, as I wanted to make sure you understood you would lose everything (zoom level settings, etc.)... So I'd definitely give 1 & 3 a go, before you go sending the GPSR back to Garmin..

Finally, if these suggestions don't work, try and update your USB drivers.

From what I can see people tell people are trying to load mapsets and routes together ..what I do and have had no problems on my Quest1 firmware 2.7 and CN v8 is to load the maps to gps first then plan a route in Mapsource and then upload to the unit.

Guitarman, get a life and upgrade, already. I mean, what's the point of spending money on new maps (version 8 cartography) when you have a computer operating system that is 9 years old?

It's called "irony" Michael I've found a number of threads that gush about how good Garmin service is. That isn't my experience so far and I'm hoping Garmin really do come up with something.

Anyway, on the question of Win98... I have 2 PCs. A family PC running XP and my "music production" PC in my office running 98. The PC I have most access to is my office one. Most of the time it does what I need it to do and it's more convenient than using the family pc so I'm not about to change the PC just for this!

So - if you want to run the most recent version of MapSource (probably a prerequsite if you want to use the most recent versions of the cartography), it would be best if you set everything up on the newer computer.
