I've bought a DVD from Garmin of North America for a forthcoming trip.

Put the DVD into the lap top, no problem, autorun fires up.

I select the 'Run Bootstrapper.exe' option & a Garmin box pops up saying 'Extracting', all good so far. Then I get another Garmin box saying 'Welcome to Garmin Map setup this program will guide you through the map installation process. BMW Motorrad Navigator V is connected', still looking good.

I then click on 'continue' & get a box saying 'connecting with server', at this point nothing happens apart from (I assume) failed attempts to connect to Garmin's server to (I assume) validate the product.

I've tried temporarily switching off the Anti virus scan & Firewall, neither of these things helped & I've just spent over an hour chatting to a lovely, but apparently clueless, girl at Garmin who was unable to help.

The problem does appear to be my laptop's failure to connect with Garmin's server, though this could be a completely wrong assumption on my part, but whatever the cause I am getting nowhere fast.

Any thoughts please?

I have Garmin's Mapinstall tool as well, but when I load that, although it finds the Nav V it says I have no unlocked maps to install, I'm assuming this is because I have yet to validate/verify the product with Garmin direct.

Register the unit on Garmin's site, log In to "my Garmin", Connect your satnav, pop in the DVD and follow the instructions?

Apologies if you've tried it that way already.

Cheers, all help appreciated but the unit's already registered. The problem is getting the map from the DVD to the laptop.

You need to download Garmin Express - and run it to load the maps.

Sorry - missed that bit out.

Yep, tried that, thanx. The problem is, I suspect, getting the DVD unlocked.

I'm now trying a different laptop in case it was a problem with my older machine.

Absolutely no different though, still getting stuck at the 2nd step, 'communicating with server'. I tried calling Garmin again & got a particularly unhelpful creature who appeared to be having a worse day than me judging by her shitty, shitty attitude.

I'm now onto my 3rd call & will just ask for a refund so I can buy an SD card with the map on. Not ideal as I wanted to load it onto my existing SD card so I could listen to music whilst pootling through America & Canada.

I really don't understand why Garmin go out of their way to make things so frustrating.

If you have the DVD unlock code - can you download the mapping off Garmin - using the unlock code only, not the DVD?

Unfortunately not. Got a much more helpful, I think, woman on the phone now seeing if she can unlock it at their end.
If not she's agreed to replace it with an SD card.

4 hours and counting..............

Edit: The new, helpful lassie was unable to unlock the DVD at their end either so she's just added the map I wanted to my Garmin account. I am currently downloading (uploading?) it to my Nav V memory card.
