Are the dealers normally full of gs's this time of year if so how come the prices dont drop .Some still wanting £7.5 for a 10.000 miler 2003 yet private lucky to get £6000 I reckon :nenau

Because the dealers are doing you a big favour by selling you a bike & so you should feel honoured to pay so much for it. Thats the impression I always get when I talk to them. :(

A dealer is normally aware about the fact that after summer follows winter and therefore try to plan accordingly during late summer and autumn. Of course sometimes they have still bought too many bikes or try to lower prices to get some action during the dark months, but if they can afford to sit with the bikes until spring there's really no sense in offering large rebates now.

The private market is very much more sensitive to what date it is and usually shows huge price drops in autumn/winter.

True - but there are loads of GS's about these days. Got to have some effect on second hand prices sooner or later, however much the dealers try to defy gravity.

Thats whats happened to BMW cars now they are more common than Mondeos.

I thought today when speaking to a dealer by saying but you have something like 8 gs's in stock you surely can't be happy thinking this a good barganning point His reply was I have never been happier because now I can say I have more gs's than any other dealer in the country :nenau .
I said isn't that telling you your prices are too high he said no it'll soon be spring.

As I said earlier, he decided he could afford to have those bikes sitting over winter long ago. So unless something sudden and dramatic happened to his economy it would be stupid of him to sell them cheap now. If birdseye is right about the market being overflooded the dealer will know that early summer and from mid summer to early autumn he'll be eager to clear his stock for the next winter - that's the right time to bargain with him.

If you want to make a great deal in the coming months your best bet would be to concentrate on finding the really desperate privateers.

£6000!!...........I hope not, I just paid a lot more than that for an 08/2004 with 20k miles on it. One of very few private sales I could find and loads cheaper than any Dealer offerings. I paid £7150 inc full luggage system, full Remus titanium exhaust, nice lowered seat (rider and pillion seat done in grey) and a few other bits.

I've just done a load of Internet searches again (MCN, Autotrader etc).......next to no private sales and typical Dealer price £7500 for 'bare' bike upwards.

I think some are confusing 1200's with 1150's. Surely the 1200 hadn't been launched in 2003.

As I understand it, the dealers dont own the bikes. They belong to BMW and are available to any other dealer. Done this way so that the dealer cant feel pressure to discount old stock. HD are the same.

You're not confusing this with new bikes? Do BMW really own every used bike in the country? Sounds very complicated unless they also own all of the dealers

I have never heard of anything like that and definitely know that isn't the case in my country.

Dealers sometime have a 'stocking plan ' with bmw finance where they have a loan from bmw to keep the showroom full of bikes and they pay an agreed rate of interest for this. Some new bikes may have a no charge period where the dealer has for example 60 days to sell the bike before they pay any interest charges. Most dealers though simply own their stock. With the unit cost of a bike being relatively small, and most showrooms not being that big ,the can usually afford to keep stocks high and keep stuff until the price is right rather than sell on cheaply.
The opposite is true at car dealers. The unit cost of a car is much higher at a franchised dealership and they tend to have much more stock. Most car dealers get rid of stock once it has reached 90 days as the value of cars is constantly dropping. The best time to haggle on a car is the last few days of the month where the dealer needs to hit targets to get bonus's.Sometimes the end of the quarter can be even more important. :thumb
