Seems to me that lots of people "upgrade" to the most recent model before they've even got their existing bike run in properly. Have lots of members got to much money or what. If so they could send me some and keep their old bike.
My 1994 60000KM bike runs a dream (apart from last weeks fuel filter episode) and I intend taking it up to the 160000KM mark.
This bike is staying with me till the end of it's life. I feel no need to get a newer version and have made a few cheap mods as listed below to make it perfect for me. (dual lights, screen extension, steering stop as I broke mine)
So come on UKGSER's go riding and forget the shopping.

Richie, that's good for you but maybe not for me....my 1999 1100 has almost as many km's as yours (56,000km )and it's 5 years younger so my riding is clearly different to yours. This weekend I am going from Belgium to Princetown ( about 800km one way so by the end of the w/end probably 2000km+ ridden) - are you coming ??
All these extras are just making the GS even better for the individual involved. I have a different saddle , screen and lights , some crash bars , side panels, Remus and I think the bike is great. It was great before now it's 'mine' and even better. I used to try and keep exchanging my bikes before they got too old. Not this time , this GS is staying with me I hope for more than the 160,000 km mark......and we really do all have too much money too

Bought mine two years ago with only 19000KMS recorded by the dealer who I know. So I am not doing to badly for mileage.
Works out at 24Pence a mile including petrol but not insurance or clothing. Without even bothering to guess a resale value this is a good price as the UK tax man gives 25Pence a mile for work. (free bike, almost!)
Sorry Gecko can't go to Princetown this weekend but maybe we'll meet up sometime, who knows.

You are confusing me - you are talking about the UK tax but your avatar says you are in Belgium - r u an expat or a local Belge ?
The Belgium tax allows depreciation and running costs to be tax dedcutable too. Quite a few mates of mine get a new bike every 3 or 4 years paid by the tax man. Everything including tyres and fuel goes into the tax return and hey presto - free bike . Sadly my company car excludes me being able to join in this little arrangment

Personally, I've never undertood why anybody buys cars or bikes new (although I'm glad somebody does). Personally given the choice between one new toy or several second hand toys, I know what I choose. hence I own a Landrover V8 and a chrevrolet, as well as the GS, all for less than a new 3 series... ages breed character (as my Dad tells me)

Alas being one of these dull types who works for a company, I can't work any clever tax dodges...

Big mileage

My R1100GS 94 has 44000miles/70000km, wanna race to the 160 mark? I do recall that Vern's similar model/colour etc is very close if not already way past the 100 000 mile mark.

Do agree that it would be nice to see this one hit that type of mileage while still in my posession, but if the lotto comes in I am buying the whole GS collection .

hey . why wax lyrical about all the reasons why people change their bike after such a short space of time??

by your reckoning, mine is a baby at 2 years old. i use it for daily commute of @100 miles round turn and its done the job admirably.
however, the 36 thousand miles in all weathers have highlighted several major deficiencies eg weight, stupid corrosian unresistant wheels, which i look forward to the next gs resolving in spring 04.

and yes, i have paid a 100 quid deposit to get in that teutonic queue!!

also, i am convinced that its not how many miles a bike has done rather, its the time frame over which it has been used; compressed mileage does wear and tear a bike far more than mincing around only when the sun shines.
