Hi Fellow Millionaires ! Posted a query t'other day regarding me clutch having given up on me in the Cotswolds, thanks for the replies. It was the clutch slave cylinder. Also the pipe or whatever that links to it was corroded and needed replacing ? OK,being of the not so Technical type,I said this shoud be replaced too.
Thought to me good old self," It wont cost too much, two little bits like that"
so you can understand my surprise when I got a call saying the trusty (or not so trusty lately ) steed was ready to collect and would I be kind enough to part with just over £274 of me hard earned dosh !!
Does this seem right to any/all of you out there ? I dunno, being relativly new to the BMW scene !! Seems a bit steep to me ! anyway,be nice to hear from anyone who's experienced the same problem.

Cheers folks,stay sunnyside up.

Lost count of the amount of times i've posted this picture of what happens to a clutch line if not looked after. That price sounds about right with main dealer prices and parts. :augie

What the clutch line should look like

What it looks like after a very short while

The problem isn't the two parts, but the location of the clutch slave cylinder...you have to drop the rear shock and swing arm to get to it.....unless you're St.Eptoe :)

I suspect that's where the bulk of the bill lies isn't it? In the labour?

EDIT..ooops, he got there first:)

Hi, is there a way to prevent this problem?
Thankyou.

on my 1150 i slit the outer sheath covering the pipe down near the slave cylinder. this was to allow the water that gets in to drain out (it gapes at the top end).

also a big dollop of wd40, grease, acf50 etc. on the lower union to prolong life.

Yes.

I've had a few braided stainless lines and fittings made up.

Tried a few, some worked, some didn't. Took a while because of the angle and small sized end, which has to fit on a larger bore line. I'll post a picture tomorrow ;)

I'm major servicing at the weekend and whilst I'm at it I have a list of little things to check so this one has been added, steptoe I'm interested in the modification, Thanks
Noel

Just been out to the garage to check mine. What a bloody awkward place to get to. Managed to get some ACF-50 on it. Top marks again you guys:bow
Thanks

You can get to the banjos with a sawn off 6mm allen and a lot of patience. However, if you need to replace much, then this is what happens

The pic is mine a fortnight ago. Took me 1/2 a day start to finish. Could do it a little faster now I know exactly what to do, but not much - it's still a long job whichever way you slice it.

How exactly did you get access to do this? I'd like to have a go at mine, but don't fancy doing a complete strip down. Is it possible to cut back the outer sleeve and apply grease to the pipe without removing much?

Don't worry - answered my own question! Just been out for a half hour's tinker about. I managed to easily cut back the rubber sheathing using a long knife over the top of the gearbox. This quickly created a worryingly large pool of rusty water on the floor. I then pulled at the sheathing where it starts near the front shock under the tank to expose the metal end of the pipe.

I only hope I managed to catch this in time!

I then liberally applied axle grease to the pipe fittings and topped this off with some chain wax for good measure.

I then forced some more grease in between the sheathing and the pipe under the tank, and then pulled a small cable tie tight over the top opening to stop any more water from running down.

(sorry about the focus)

I just hope all this hasn't disturbed the rusty pipe enough to start it leaking next time I ride......
