Hi Folks,
Does anyone know if the road that runs up the side of Loch Sheil is an un classified road or just a forest trail, in other words is it passable.

Ta

Steve

There will, no doubt, be someone who has personal knowledge along in a moment. In the meantime, although the track looks passable, as you can see here -http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/loch-shiel.shtml - Google Maps says that "This route has restricted usage or includes private roads." In practice there are very few places in Scotland where you can legally ride or drive off-road.

I don't know. On the OS maps it looks like it will be either an estate track of forestry track.

Here's a photo from 2011 (Geograp.org)

Let us know if find out as it looks like a nice ride. Or, you could just go - on street view there doesn't appear to be any private sign at the Glenfinnan end, but I think there's a picnic site or something down there.

A couple more pics

Where is Loch Sheil?
West of Fort William at Glenfinnan.

FYI.
The monument situated at the head of Loch Shiel was erected in 1815 to mark the place where Prince Charles Edward Stuart ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") raised his standard, at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Rising.

That track on Google maps definitely looks passable all the way down to Strontian.

Let me know if you go down it, I'll definitely put it on my to do list for next year.

If you ride it ,you will be prosecuted.

Your bike will then be recovered to Mcbay bike breakers in fort william where they have an auction at the end of the summer for all vehicles used illegally.

The funds from this sale go into the local west highland fund for poor folk.

Aaah..there was me thinking that was Loch Shiel....:D

That track is easily do-able on a GS - been a few runs down there with the UKGSer Scottish section in the "old days":rob
GC of this parish should be able to give current gate situation:thumb
Used be a locked barrier at the Glenfinnan end - but easy to to pass on a bike. At the south end at Polloch there was a gate in the forest - but it was never locked or closed when I've used the track(3 times)
I know at one point one of the bridges on the track was washed away - but hopefully replaced by now?
I'll dig out a few photies if I remember!

Cheers....................Grizzly:beerjug:

Lockable gates at either end of the trail. The one at Polloch end is usually open, Glenfinnan almost always locked.
Is it doable? yea, its an easy trail, it only gets interesting on the muddy bits.
Its not legal, they tell me :D
PM me if you want any more info.

A few pics from the Loch Shiel track - the date was 8th May 2004 - wow! how time flies:rob

The group even included Den's brother on his K1200RS:clap

Couple of wee intersting bits.
After going over the hill from Strontian, take the right turn into Glen Hurich at Kinlochan and you can eventually get back to the Corran Ferry through Glen Scaddle.
When you get to Polloch head past the forrestry huts up the hill as far as you can go for some of the best views ever.
If you get to Glenfinnan, come back by Cona Glen.
Best with a DR350 as a GS is too heavy.
See OS map 40.
