Does anyone know the dimensions of the engine locking tool for R1150gs?..... Looks just like a piece of bent bar.

I'd like to do the timing chain in the future.....no rush, just thought I'd like to have it for when I do.What pray is sir intending to use it for
You do know that your mate blocking the ring gear teeth with a carefully wedged screwdriver will do just the same
It fits in a hole on the flywheel bit and the casing I cannot remember if it is 8 or 10 mm !
BE careful where you wedge screwdriver!!
Chum I have yet to have to do them!I'd like to do the timing chain in the future.....no rush, just thought I'd like to have it for when I do.
Think I remember seeing it was 8mm, but the length and angle of the bend would be handy.
Thanks.....I've done the xam chain tensioner and if made a hell of a difference, but when the engine at normal temperature the timing chain gets noisy at tickover.Chum I have yet to have to do them!
Keep GOOD oil in them Change it regularly and don;t thrash the absolute bollocks outta them
I know quite a few with over 200K miles on them and still on original chains So don't be jumping in there making more work for yourself !!
Guides seem to be more of a problem
But again Follow the above for Guidance!!!
It's pretty difficult, and I'm 6' 2I wouldn;t
Kick stand down
handlebars turning right
and slip your leg back off over the saddle
Can I do anything right??Didn’t think you were supposed use fully synthetic oil in the 1150?
Semi synthetic at a push but good old fashioned mineral oil was best. Maybe I’m wrong?

Don't see why not, keeps it viscosity better when hot.
Try not to worry about noises on an oilheads...Thanks.....I've done the xam chain tensioner and if made a hell of a difference, but when the engine at normal temperature the timing chain gets noisy at tickover.
I had 10w40 oil in it and I've just changed it for 20w50 fully synthetic......seems quiet now!! ..... maybe I worry too much about noises.
Thanks for the advice, it does help..... another niggle for me, is mounting and dismounting when I'm loaded with luggage. Is the kickstand strong enough to take the extra weight of standing on the footpeg to dismount so I can clear my luggage?

I don't think the noise is coming from them....it seems more frontal, but lots say don't worry about it!!If the 1150 has the hollow ally pushrods then your noise when warmed up might be a loose pushrod end. i have had to re-make the pushrods for 2 of my 1100's where they got noisy when warm.
I was critical of myself for putting fully synthetic in BEFORE I asked when I said "can I not do anything right" I always appreciate input when I ask, including yours......thanks.@Johny w
"Difficult" is picking it up when Fully loaded If you do snap the Kickstand They tend to lean over on them quite a lot an ice hockey puck on the stand pad relieves that pressure a bit because it keeps the bike more vertical
Being honest I have never seen anyone manage to do the manoeuvre of standing on Kickstand and dismounting to the stand side ??
Foot down rotate to face the bike, hop back a bit and slide your leg off the saddle that way
Oils?? Well They were designed run 20W50 mineral and if you want to spend the extra on fully synth then by all means "but" you are pretty much wasting money
People are too precious about oil! If it is fresh and changed every 6000 with an OE spec filter It will be fine unless you are bouncing the Rev limiter every gear change and to be brutally honest? Not much survives that Fully synth oil or not!! If you want a GS but more performance get an S1000XR #Simples
As to doing anything right ??
if you don;t want answers from people with what basically amounts to a million (Millions ??) of miles 10's of thousands of hours Owning and working on them ?
Simply and Not meant to be rude.............................. Don;t ask !!
43000That was only during running in period and up until around 20k miles, as using fully synth stopped the engine from bedding in, which caused high engine oil consumption in later years.
How many miles on your engine ?
Bugger.....that's why I asked about dismounting using the footpeg. But Don't think I would trust it with a loaded bike.have nothing on the back seat , you WILL catch it with your foot ...or this might happen .
Intro.
Winding our way north westward, a couple of days from the Mongolian/Russian border we’d developed a reasonably fast technique of riding our heavy bikes through the sand and loose stone over the past four weeks, our main problem being the occasional big dip or hole catching us unaware.
I checked my mirror for Baz, who’d been riding behind me. He’s not there. A few moments later a young man gallops toward me, his horse’s hooves leaving a trail of dust. Soon he indicates there’s a problem and a motorcycle has crashed.
Riding quickly back, followed by Pete and fearing the...
