Hi

Thinking about a long journey on my 06 R1200GS (10k miles).
In reality are these bikes up for it given the reliability issues
that come up on here on a semi regular basis.
Dont get me wrong I love my bike and wouldnt change it
but im a bit on the edge with the issues I see on here.

Cheers

To paraphrase Disney "it's a small small world" and nowhere is too far from UPS so go and find out, when or if you break down then send for more bits. Your bike is well over its teething troubles by now, so just enjoy the ride.

As @GSaddict says just get on with it. But if you want a few things to check heres some to think about.

If your mileage is around 60K you might want to think about changing the clutch but saying that mine was only 50% worn at 50K. I doubt it will make 100K, but it might be struggling by 70K.

If the gearbox rattles in neutral you might want to get the shaft end float sorted. It might not be a reliability issue but it can't be ideal. Mine has rattled for a while but recently its sounding a bit worse. Gear shifts are great so its probably nothing to fuss about.

Final drive. My 08 was rebuilt at 50K by MikeyBoy who said all bearings were "ready". The 06 has an arguably weaker FD so again if mileage is around 40 to 50K, a precautionary rebuild makes sense.

A customer of mine has a 2005 1200GS. He's currently heading up to the attic circle. 104k miles on his bike still with original clutch and final drive ... And his bike is absolutely immaculate, no corrosion anywhere, I'm not exaggerating when I say it only looks a few months old . He doesn't worry or give it a second thought, just sets off on his next trip.

Strange, our Attic Hatch is Square... never seen a round one!

Must be a right struggle getting it up the ladder...:D:D

Thanks you!
I have to say my 1200 gets mistaken for a new bike on a semi regular basis. Its cleaner than a lot of new bikes
I see.
Final drive was one of my concerns as was the clutch but Cannon BMW fitted a new clutch for me just before delivery.
My worries always tend to be electrical issues more than mechanical as I can deal with most mechanical problems but struggle
with electrics.
Im looking at about 18 months before I can make the trip but as I know all to well 18 months vanishes realy quickly when
planning anything big.

Are you saying your bike has only done 10.000 miles or your planned trip is 10.000 miles.
Thanks you!

Also if your bike has only done 10.000 miles how come it had a new clutch fitted.
If your planned trip is 10.000 miles I'm sure service parts can be obtained on the road I would worry too much about much else unless your mileage is quite high already then just get you final drive and fpc and a few other bits checked before leaving.

Owned my 2004 1200GS since new. Now on 80k+ miles.
Been to Romania and back and many points in between over the years.
Pack a spare Fuel Pump Controller and tools and knowledge of how to fit it. It is the only thing that has (temporarily) stopped me.

:beerjug:

Forget the polishing and just do it and enjoy it take plenty of piccies.

Bikes done 35k bought it at 30k about 6 months ago. Clutch was done as there was an dropping oil from the crank seal.
Planning a ride to Mongolia.
Bike gets washed once a week and i polish the bugger as a way to relax after work.
Thank you for the heads up on the FPC, il pack a spare one.

Also take a rear hub bearing SKF 6013-2RS-C3 (not normally stocked) to ward off rear hub gremlins.....and if it did go pear shaped a good engineer can fit your bearing

In Mongolia. You'll be lucky.
