If you can afford the backup and support, why not? If you can aford a few creature comforts why not?
I am pretty sure it is not a bed of roses for them regardless of all the back up; its all about riding the bike at the end of the day and what you choose to do when you are not on it, and how you choose to get problems resolved is down to each individual.
Not that I have looked in to it myself; I dare say what they have done and are planning to do on this trip can all be accomodated with a lot less help etc.
No matter how much its costing, I think its great they are trying to promote Biking and the places they are visiting in the correct light!
And the GS site - infact any biking site, should be about its shared passions for the bike (be it general or specific in terms of make) - the bikes, the bling, the trips, the experiences and the riders........
These guys ride and are a inspiration to some, a pain to others, but at least they are doing it!!
Now, that's a thinking man's comment on why Long Way Round was not great for other bikers and is much better thought out than the rich kids slander.
I leave on Monday for an overland trip to Australia (see www.planitearth.co.uk) and have found exactly these comments from others. The most common comment is the Borat in Kazakhstan one and the second most common is about the LWR guys.
But the bottom line is still that travelling overland on a bike entails hardship and adventure, so full credit to these guys. Despite the support, they are travelling well outside of the cosetted lives that they live around town, visiting premieres etc. Some of us find a 3 day ride around Wales to be an adventure. We all have different definitions of adventure, so do it however it turns you on.

Roytonlad,
...and there was me thinking that the GS group was about a diverse range of people who were all interested in riding bikes. Some like to cruise on the motorway, some like to go off road, some have more time to talk about bikes than actually ride them... I didn't think that we judged eachother if we didn't agree with how we're using our bikes..
Wake up and smell the coffee!![]()

Can I also ask those who keep slagging LWR/LWD.. if asked to join in would you really turn it down on ethical grounds as it's not REAL GS'ing?... yeah right!
