Look who's copied the 800

someone on here claims to have a 90 bhp 800 gs,bmw claims 85 bhp for the 800 gs,were did you get those extra ponies.

Read my quote again. I didn't say my bike had 90 bhp. I said that Bike dyno tested the F800GS at 90 bhp. So don't shoot the messenger!

It is well known that the Japs have a power war, and quote optimistic 'crank' power, whereas the Europeans tend to use rear wheel power. My point is, no matter what the power of mine, the Triumphs figure is a little dissapointing.

If you have not had the chance to ride the Triumph pls do so and them comment on the power of the Triumph, I think you will be shocked.

I've already got a test lined up. I have been putting it off. You can't really test a bike on dirty greasy roads. I'm only guessing right now looking at the specs. However, I'm assured by my local triumph dealer that I'll be impressed, and you seem to think so. We'll see, jury's out.

Can't wait to hear you thoughts :)

There is a common theme throughout this thread about the poor finish and after sales service concerning triumph motorcycles which is a shame as they are the only motorcycle manifacturer left in england do they offer the same level of service in other markets? If this is so how much longer will they survive?

Got me an 09 Tiger 1050 in September.... no quibbles with it whatsoever... and having a local Triumph dealership I have faith in helps with the confidence should anything go wrong.

Mine's got just over 11k on the clock, and still looks like new. the 12k service is a big one..... but Stratstone in Leicester have a deal where for £299 ( paid interest free over 12 months) gets me the 12k and an 18k service, plus free pick up and return.

I understand a local ( ish) to me Triumph dealership will do the 12k service for the princely sum of about £370 ;)

I appreciate the Tiger 1050 has no off road capabilities, but didn't take the last 4 or 5 GS's off the road ( except up the driveway and onto a camping field) so I'm hardly going to miss that....

And if Nick Sanders can get himself round the world in record time on an R1 then any bike this side of a cruiser could do it :)

I'm looking forward to the 1200 Tiger arriving... :Motomartin

The reason triumph limited the 800 to 94 bhp,is the new european law limiting newly qualified riders to 95 bhp, they could have given it alot more power. I know several riders who own triumphs, and they have nothing but praise for them, and the dealers.

I doubt if the new tiger 800,will have the same number recalls as the bmw,.

That's down to Triumph's reluctance to recall their bikes if they can avoid it. It took them six years to recall bikes that were having issues with the plastic fuel line fittings that were failing.

Took BMW 5 years to fix the FPC problem on the 1200 and it still was never recalled.

Both Triumph models are on show at Cobb and Jagger in Shipley, they will be registered for road tests 1st weekend in the new year.
Both bikes look good and feel right to sit on (Comfy too after climbing of the GS800)
Looking at both bikes you can see why some people compare them with the GS, but if you were to design a touring, general purpose off road style bike yourself with a free choice of components you would come up with similar design. Forget about the beak being a copy, yes it is but from the Suzuki Dr Big BMW copied it from to start with. The GS800 has very few original design features except the engine balance system and the under seat fuel tank.
The Triumph will be a big seller, it will be reliable (My Tiger 995 was) and Triumph will take note of customers reactions and make adjustments. The quality will easily match the rusting peeling finish of the GS and the price is less than the GS650
So will I be buying one, not at the moment. Im still happy with the F800GS but a test ride in 2011 may alter that.

When you ride one, well lets just say your going to be shocked :augie

You obviously haven't owned a Triumph built since 2003 then if you think Triumph build quality is a match for BMW:D:D

And the price of the F650GS is £6500 otr, which is £649 less than the list price of the Tiger 800.

Go and ride one Bob, then post your comments.:D

I was looking through MCN this week before deciding not to buy it, but will do next week as they are testing the Tiger 800 against the F650GS. But why go head to head between those two bikes ? OK, the 650GS is really a detuned 800, unless it's a case of cast wheel model against cast wheel model. :nenau

Hmmmm! MCN testing a Triumph against a BMW wonder what will win?

Quite right Bob Southgate, but the price is much closer when you add the usual extras on, in the case of BMW these were not optional when I was looking to buy, all the stock bikes were fitted with Centre stands, trip computers, heated grips and white indicators.
Like for like the Triumph costs £7459 and the F650GS costs £7080. Still £379 cheaper but so much less bike. The Tiger spec is more like the F800GS which now costs £8265 with the same options.
The Tiger 800XC with the same kit costs £8059.

BMW have a real fight on their hands. Both very close on price , each with its good points and bad. Its now down to how the bikes feel to ride, BMW have slipped so much on quality and reliability over the past few years they can no longer make this their trump card.

Whats all the fuss about its been done before......................

The final drives packed in then as well.......................

Triumph will win, it always does in the rag whatever model they test.

I just didn't want a new model and all the unforeseen niggles involved.

I'm happy with my GS thank you !
