Riding the same bike for 14 years is okay but I have a hankering for one of these.

From what model year do they have non-servo brakes?

Is there anything I should check, watch for or avoid beyond the obvious.

Looking for one with a radio and a heated seat for commuting on.

Don't mind going to a dealer either...

You have a massive choice stay away from servo brakes if possible. Mine is a 06 with about 45 k miles with servo no problems but even sitting at lights it whines. Watch out in Irl as they don't seem to hold their value so well here JJH

Other than usual stuff like tyres brakes and service history there a few things I would take particular attention to buying used:

Have a look at front headlight make sure it is not cracked or broken (Also check the adjuster for beam up and down works ok)

Check condition of metal work under the body panels - if not looked after it will be corroded.

Suspension - make sure it works (sounds ridiculous) but if it has ESA or ESA11 just check that everything is working as it should.

Switchgear - check it all cos they tend to do big miles and tend to show signs of age.

Mine was £1500 to replace including the switchgear ( thanks cock for the warranty )

A new one is £350 , depending which one it is.

Had 4 bikes with servo brakes ,never had a problem .

Radio/cd is OK, I had iPOD conversion done on the radio by DENSO, the CD is crap . Is £900 for a new RADIO/CD :blast . Covered by warranty:thumb2

If you can get a Sargent seat you have all day comfort and your partner will love you...forever:D

Thanks more sound advice,

I assume you can buy a BMW extended warranty for a 2010/2011 bike if you're buying from a dealer, what about if you buy a 3 year old bike privately?

Does the warranty depend on having the bike serviced by the dealer at the appropriate (annual or mileage) intervals?

1200rt

Like others have said, I am one of the silent majority who are quite happy with the servo brakes, and have never had a problem.
However, be sure to buy one with cruise control.
it is the only thing I miss on my bike.
Bought it 20 months old, ignored the frantic suggestions that I should take out an extended warranty, and now have it umpteen years.
The only thing to fail so far is the fuel pump controller.
Gearing choice by BMW is Lousy.
Mainstand balance is lousy, but that's about it.

Yes it's not a warranty more like an Insurence policy with regular servicing as a requirement JJH

My last RT, a 3 year old bike had an extended BMW Warranty, as the new owner that warranty was transferred to me . Apart from corrosion , ESA ( up 18000mile)& Switchgear, all parts are covered, this warranty can be extended up to 9 years ( EVERY YEAR you have to call them) or 80000 miles .
Call a dealer he will tell you what the deal is, my info is 5 years old.
Don't be shy...:D

Thanks Zoltan, did your ESA give up at 18000 miles? Needless to say, I reckon this is what I'll do. Would a 2010 or 2011 bike still have a warranty which could be transferred to me as the new owner and extended?

The damper went, so the ESA was replaced. The new one was not communicated with the switchgear , so that was replaced too. It was at 12000 miles.

How heavy are they on tyres?

Is there anything you can to protect the forks apart from rinsing them with clean water after each ride?

Has anyone got any experience of the radio with Bluetooth/ iphone/Zumo set up. Is it effective, which is the best helmet set-up for an earplug wearer?

Thanks again

I'm currently using Scotoiler FS 365... It seems to do the job :)

As for tyres I can't wait to get off the stock fit ones as there rubbish (IMHO). I've M PR 3's sitting in a dealers waiting for me which should transform my RT.

Genius! and so much cheaper than ACF-50

Thanks
