Lost 3rd and 5th gear

Whilst touring through France last week on a 1988 R100GS I pulled out to overtake a lorry and when I changed up to 5th there was the most horrendous banging. I changed down to fourth and that seemed ok so i tried 5th again and it was definitely gone. I proceeded slowly from there on but discovered that 3rd gear had gone too.

After a short while oil started leaking out of the shaft drive breather indicating oil was leaking from the gearbox. Possibly through the output bearing.

If anyone knows what causes this, Please let me know whats wrong and what the fix is. For the record, the bike still got me back to the ferry. All hail the GS.

Sounds like the output shaft input bearing has decided it's had enough

Hmmm, had the same happen to me a few years back, gearbox was knackered. Mine was rebuilt by "Phil, aka the Boxerman" in Leicester. First class job. Hope he's still about, sure somebody in the area will pop up later and give you his phone number.
