Well, not quite. I haven't really lost them.

I'm off to France on Monday, so thought I'd update the maps on my zumo 500. All went well, but I've now got CN Europe NT 2014.10 UK and Ireland only. It's still showing CN Europe 2013.30, so I've got maps for France.

Have I done something wrong? Or is the latest map update just for UK and Ireland? If I go to myDashboard it shows everything up to date.

just updated mine yesterday with garmin express, no probs, whole of europe:confused:

I suspect it might be as simple as the Zumo 500's internal memory being too small to take the full 'Whole of Europe' map set.

From vague recolection, there is an option to chose which maps you wish to load. Given that you are off to France, you won't need detailed mapping of Helsinki or downtown Madrid... unless you get VERY lost :D Or use a data card, assuming a 500 has a data card slot, that is.

An update.

A quick call to Garmin before I'd left showed it was me being a bit of a numpty. In Mapinstaller, I'd selected my Zumo, I should have selected the sd card.

All on now. It took several hours to complete, and I quite literally had everything packed and waiting for the download so that I could leave.

Good that you got it sorted. it seems that, other than when the device is brand new, you need an SD card in of at least 8GB just to handle map updates, as the internal memory is just not up to it.
Given that memory is so cheap, I really do fail to understand Garmin's reasoning in equipping the thing with inadequate memory. Yes, it is easily rectified by adding an SD card, but you shouldn't need to. And, loading to an SD card seems to be an order of magnitude slower that downloading to the computer and the internal memory on the device.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday

I don't want to defend Garmin, they do a lot of strange things. But the 550 has been around for some time. In that period the file sizes for the maps have increased vastly. They could have predicted the need for more memory but they didn't. Hardly anyone needs the whole of Europe on the device anyway so you could just load those areas you actually need. Or as you found just use an SD card, since you don't have to stand and wait whilst it downloads I really don't see the problem if it takes a while.

In my experience, bought the latest maps and updated my UK map without selecting the rest of europe at the same time. - well I didn't have the memory to insert when prompted :blast Now I only have UK maps and when trying to add France and Germany, all I get is device up to date. there doesnt seem to be an option to add extra at a later date. So I'd ensure memory is capable then update the whole mess in one go..:D I know i've done something wrong somewhere but I'll let Garmin sort it out.:rob

Sounds very similar to my problem. Go to Garmin Mapinstaller. Click the drop down box to make sure you've selected the latest maps (if you've previously downloaded them, then they should be there). On device, you don't select Zumo, you select whatever the sd card is called. Basically, there'll only be 2 options, one being Zumo. You want the other one. It will take several hours, so best done overnight, this is because it uses an early version of usb. There are quicker ways via usb2 and a card reader, but this is easiest.

And, particularly if you are using a laptop, make sure you disable the energy saving features on the computer, as yo do not want it putting itself to sleep in the middle of the download.
