Having riden a 1200...........not bad but wouldn't want one

Having owned an 1150.......not bad but not quite perfect

Still owning an 1100..........so please remind me, what is the definitive definition of progres??

Having owned an 1100 (which never missed a beat) that took me all over Europe, Scotland and Ireland and commuted everyday, yes it's a great machine, but.. the brakes were very poor, the gearbox like a tractor, it surged at low speeds and didnt handle anything like the 12. As a long distance tourer the 1100 was near perfect, as a bike to ride for fun, commuting AND touring the 12 just pips it. The 12 is simply more nimble, 'sporty' and fun to ride imho :)

Mines a July 06 with 3500 miles, just started a daily commute to Belgravia from Hemel and mines never missed a beat yet ( he says touching his wood).
Think you got a Friday afternoon one Rhino,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I hope.

Good luck with the next.
I do Luton to The Strand each morning, at least you miss the fun of the M1 road works :)

well looks like I am sticking with My 12. But I wont be crossing Pidcocks door step again. So far I have yet to hear a thing from the boss there, even tho BMW have been in touch with him several times, they offered Me £6k to take the bike back or £7k if I wanted to do a deal against a 04 1150gsa they wanted just under £9k for. No apology or any sign of regret for sending My bike back with the retun pipe to the fuel tank loose so it sprayed petrol or the right hand cylinder and down the bike as I rode it, or for any of the problems I have had with it.
One thing I am concidering is letting My wife do what she offered to do in the start, and have a word with her contacts at watchdog, as she works for the beeb and produces the local consumer affairs program. I wonder if BMW want the same sort of coverage Volvo are getting for their attitude to a saftey issue on thier attitude to build and saftey issue with what is supposed to be one of the best selling bikes in the UK at the moment ?
Don't get Me wrong, the 12 is a great bike, and I love riding it, just fed up of being good mates with the local bwm assist guys.

Problems and dealers

I have said this before (many times) but so often the reliability/quality of a bike or a car is due to not just the efficiency of the dealer but to his attitude to the customer. That is why I stick with BMW - thay are expensive but I know that they are reliable and that the boss is always around and will greet me as a long lost friend each time I appear and is happy to explain why it all costs so much! (Evren on one frightening occasion persuading me to ride pillion with him so that he could demonstrate a point!)
I followed a Citroen C4 today and remarked to my wife that it looked a good proposition. I had Citroens for over 30 years but when my local dealer tried to pull the wool over my eyes on a completely unnecessary job that was the end and I switched to Ford - about 8 years ago!!!
I am sure that there are a lot of people around with my attitude - I don't mind paying just so long as I feel that i am getting value for money.

Sometimes I wonder how much of the reliability of modern bikes rests with the quality of the dealership.

I have said this before (many times) but so often the reliability/quality of a bike ... is due to not just the efficiency of the dealer but to his attitude to the customer.
Perhaps I've misunderstood your posts, but surely the dealer is only a factor if the bike is unreliable in the first place. :nenau

Lets face it, if any bike or car was 100% reliable (not limiting this to 1200s) then the quality of the dealer is academic ... because (apart from the servicing) you won't be seeing him anyway.

Dealers and reliability

"Lets face it, if any bike or car was 100% reliable (not limiting this to 1200s) then the quality of the dealer is academic ... because (apart from the servicing) you won't be seeing him anyway."
My 1150GS and now my 1200GS, both bought new in Lyon have been very reliable over the last 5 years. Not 100% - parhaps 99! On the 1150, 10 minutes on the computer cured a stalling problem. On the 1200 the fitting of composite washers stopped the brakes squealing. Oh, and a broken bolt on the centre stand replaced straightaway without charge;
Although there is now a dealer ( who also sells BMW cars) in my town I prefer to stay loyal to the man in Lyon, 25 miles up the road. I was there a couple of days ago for a national BMW free safety check, I saw him last week at the Motorcycle show in Lyon, and a month or so ago I was there with a friend who ordered a 1200R. I have been there to test drive the 800 bikes and for various launchings of new models during the past year. Yes, I do also see him about once a year for a service/and a new front tyre a few months ago/and to buy an Adventure screen and....etc;etc..) I also took the 1200 there a few days before the guarantee expired and asked him if I should have an extra service as a safeguard. He put on his helmet, took off around the town and was back in 15 minutes saying 'don't bother.' That is just customer service but it also inspires confidence. Sorry if i have wandered a bit off the thread!

well enough is enough and the deal has been done, the 12 had been working its way back into My heart and yes I admit was beinging to enjoy riding it again........till I get up to go to work Monday morning put the key in press the button and....clunk. Yep flat battery. Bike is used every day and does at least 40 odd miles a day. So I think okay My fault the tank bags caught the indiactor and put it in parking light mode. Jump the bike of a jump pack and ride to work.
Bike starts that night rdie home stick it on the optimate and jobs a good un till friday. Admitadly it seems to spin over slow but hey its starting. Monday comes round and yep clunk. Call mondial out as I am fecked off now. Terry shows up, cracking guy can't praise him enough. We spend 3 hours trying to get the battery to fail on the tester as even though we both know its a duff battery, they wont let him change it unless it fails on the tester. So we jump it again and I ride to wollaston who just go yep no probs and fit a new battery. Bikes spins up so much quicker, without the clocks even flickering. So as its due a service( okay 13,800 is a tad late but hey I ride it every day ) so I book it in for its service.
Fast forward to today. Take the bike in to wollaston.....see Matt sales guy...lgot any 1150 gsas ? Er not onsite but a 04 one with abs and boxes is due in. Okay how much for mine.....talk figures I go okay sounds good, get first refuasl on bike when it comes in. Here have the keys to our 12 gsa demoe till yours is ready.......trundle off have a great time on 12 gsa....get back theres a 1150 gsa sat in the showroom.....02 none abs but with full BMW luggage tourtech lights and a full remus....how much....really ... sign papers its comeing home with Me next weekend :) will be posting a full remus system and a set of vario panniers and top box in the for sale section once the 1150 is home......might even sel the BMW adv luggae and tap the civil one up for a price :)

well enough is enough and the deal has been done, *SNIPPED*

Sounds like a bloody good result Rhino.......given the choice of a brand new 12gs or a S/H 1150 Adv, I wouldn't hesitate for one second.

Enjoy the Adv....you'll love it :thumb2
