LOST ignition key

If you take the master key to a decent locksmiths, I'm sure they can cut you a replacement coded key which will probably be cheaper than one from BMW.

I've done this a few times with recent Ford car keys which are all coded nowadays.

Depends how clever the key/ECU security system is I would have thought. It may be that there's a magic code number held in the security vaults in der Farterland and unless you have access to it you can't properly encode the key. I don't doubt that some automotive keys just have a simple code that can be read by an independent locksmith and then directly programmed into a new key to create a clone but the seeming complexity of getting a new BuMW key suggests it's more complicated, or it's just that no-one has tried?
