Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem to the one that I discovered today.
The retaining pin on my 2002 1150 Adv rear brakes has disappeared. This has caused the pads to fall slightly and rub on the rear wheel hub where the brake disc is screwed to it.
I did replace the pads, but that was about 9000 miles ago. The bike was parked up for 2 days in a secure car park in Dublin and then when I got to my destination today after 120 miles I found this problem.
I can't figure out how this pin cound simply have fallen out as I remember how tough it was to get out to replace the pads.
:nenau

Never had that problem. Did you put the circlip back in when you changed the pads? If so it's probably been nicked.

If it's anything like the 1100 setup then I think you'd know about it if it had slid out as it ejects spoke side of the calliper, would have made a racket or damaged a spoke or two I'd guess :nenau

Yea, the circlip defnitely went back in. I was thinking the same as you, that someone helped themselves to it.

It is the same set up, it ejects towards the spokes, so had it come off mid ride I think I'd have known about it, the spokes aren't damaged. So hopefully I'll get away with just getting a new pin and circlip and not have to replace the entire wheel because of the grooves worn by the pads hitting the wheel as I rode.

Just had a loom at mine as I am going to fit new pads this week.

No retaining circlip on mine. Any pointers on the size of circlip I require?

It looks like you can only buy the complete set from BMW which would be a waste.

I know the brakes were replaced last July just before I bought it so maybe it wasn't put back right then. Thats 5000 miles I've done with no Circlip. Could have been a disaster.

Do you have a pair of vernier calipers? You could use those to measure the pins' diameter were the circlip goes and probably find ten for a quid on ebay.

Do you reckon those are the ones I should order?

If the external dia of the pin is 3.5mm would this be the right clip?

These are the ones I ordered when I found the original missing, snug fit and still in place!

40% of bikes i look at have the circlip missing and none have ever fallen out.

To be honest I found it hard to imagine this pin falling out as I remember it requiring a bit of persuasion to get it out to change the pads 10000 miles ago.
So when I saw it missing I thought could someone have done it intentionally?
Either way, with the pin missing and the pads dropping down and rubbing on the wheel hub as I rode I feel lucky to have gotten away unscathed.

Popped into a motor factors and picked up 6 E Clips for 20p. A bargain and I can ride worry free now.:beerjug:
