had a bit of a run out early afternoon with gf on back and mate on his 1200 gs and was really impressed about how well it rides with a pillion but the screen is aweful.

its got an aftermarket wunderlust one on and i have it set at the highest setting. only did about 85 miles but got back to a sore neck and a stinking headache from the buffeting. unless i can find a screen to resolve this the bike will be sold as really spoilt a good short run out.

going to try one of the mra vario ones and sell my existng screen. im 5ft 10 and tried two different helmets neither of which were any bette. how much better would the vario be or is it horses for courses to a degree?

I had a vario on my 1150 and it was better for me I'm also 5 foot ten :beerjug:

I have this one.

Its a Calsci. It was on the bike when I got it last year so I don't know how bad the OEM one is.

I have fitted winglets and have this screen in the middle setting. I ride with an open face helmet and there is little buffeting. I think its the winglets that have made a difference as I used to get some buffeting prior to fitting them.

Did you try the Tobinators yet? I think the screen on mine is a tall one of some description but without the Tobinators it's horrible, loads of buffeting. I have it on highest setting with Tobinators and have so far done around 3K Kms and it's fine, one trip of 300 Kms - no buffeting :thumb
Have a MRA Vario on the Transalp and would say they are definitely worth a try as well.... Hope you can get it sorted cos so far I think they are a great bike...

Setting the screen to it's highest is not necessarily the right thing to stop buffetting...its actually more likely to cause it, as it makes a bigger pocket of low pressure air behind the screen.

Try it in other positions as well.

Try it without the screen. It's surprising how much thy ewind is deflected just by the light/instrument pod.

I use the standard screen with Tobinators for long trips but am thinking about cutting off the angled section at the top as that seems to cause turbulence.

Take a look at the screeen in Bandit's post #4.

That hole in the lower middle bit of the screen.......It's got a special name, but for the life of me I can't remember it......they are cunningly designed though, to allow enough air in to fill the vacuum bubble behind the screen but without causing a breeze.

Years and years ago, there was a big thread about them here.......I believe it was Ricardo Khun, he of Advrider and Rikki bars fame and a bit of a twisted engineering genius, who was pioneering the cutting of holes in the correct shape to solve buffetting.

Then Andy Tobin made his Tobinators and the problem was solved in a different way.....effectively raising the bottom edge of the screen and angling the whole thing to allow the pressure to even out but still to re-direct the flow.

If you can find the info and have an old screen sitting about, cutting one of those holes in it might be the answer.

was in the middle setting when i got it and that was bad so tried the lowest and highest. the lowest seems to be better up until 40 ish then just as bad after. the highest is the best but its margins of rubbishness.

havent tried the torbinators yet. have to wait till next month when i get some more cash but would like to try the mra vario and then try and sell the screen thats on as i would imagine id get a decent amount back for it.

i was reading about the removal of the screen but not sure i like the look of it. sad i know.

im sure its just a case of finding the right screen and position. but we will see. just fitted some risers today to help me sit up straighter which may also help marginally

Any chance of a pic?? I'd like to see how they are... about the screen - I think I may well try the Vario if I can afford it but Tobinators do definitely work :thumb

NACA vent?

Mike

Mine s on highest setting and bolt upright... I wear an open ace helmet or a flip front......can ride at 80 with no issues....just need to try different options...

I'd try a set of tobs first. Got mine on here cheap if they don't work for you. You could probably sell them for what you paid. Solved it for me though I haven't played much I have it just raised in most forward position and that makes it comfortable at 70.

Screens are a very personal thing but I'm 5ft 10, When I bought the bike it already had a larger aftermarket screen on it but it caused terrible buffeting, I then bought a Vario and that was crap, then I bought a TT deflector for the screen I already had.. perfection, I can sit at 95 with absolutely no buffeting, my head sits perfectly still, I got it secondhand for £25 and it's the best improvement I think I have made in 5 years.

well ive bitten the bullet and ordered a mra vario so hoping this improves the buffetting to a degree that im happy with. if not will have to try some tobinators as well. ill keep you all posted.

Yep, that sounds right :thumb2
He is and so are you: Tobers wonderful solution does work and for the reason that you said.

After years of watching my screen wobble about on the Tobinators I decided to try another fix. All I did was to revert to the standard GSA mountings but cut some slots in the rear-most bolt hole so that I could angle the screen to get more air passing under it.

As you say, it seems to be that there's a low pressure area behind the screen that causes the buffeting. Just drilling some holes in the screen or cutting some of the screen away at the lower edge will do the trick. Elegant brackets and NACA ducts seem to be unnecessary.

If the plan is to replace the screen, there's not much to lose by trying a few modifications to it first.

the screen thats on is a decent wunderlust one or however its spelt so going to sell it on ebay. how much do you guys think the screen is worth.
