my 88 RT was putting out a healthy amount of volts before i took it to bits , now I'm down to 8 or 9 :blast
ive not really touched any electrical connections only sprayed a bit of wd40 over alternator etc when i had the front cover off for painting. I've had the tank off when doing the headstock bearings but not touched anything and cant find any connections that have been disturbed.
when it all went back together the volt meter was only showing 8 on tick over and 9 with a few revs. the generator light doesnt come on either and i think it should do. ?

any ideas ? ive cleaned residual oil of off the brush and rotor but will go get some electrical cleaner too to clean it properly.

Did you disconnect the battery before removing the
front cover?
It's possible to short out the diode board if you don't!

no i didn't Roger , i didnt know it was possible?

would that give those symptoms if i did then ?

i think i should mention that the bike runs ok but stops completly every half mile with all lights and ignition lights going off. it restarts more or less straight away . moving the light switch to park seems to help :blast

no good for touring

also when the ignition is turned on the 3 lights (neutral, gen and oil) all come on but after a couple of seconds get quite a bit brighter .......its all a mystery to me:confused::comfort

thanks for the idea, but no its not just checked and cleaned them all , and still the same

i can't think of anything else to explain the warning lamps coming on.

the low voltage i don't really have much idea, but in any weird charging problem with airheads, i always swap the diode board out with a known good one. it can be a source of much weirdness and i've never managed to test one successfully :nenau

changed the diode board over from my R100r and its still the same, just over 8 volts
can't think what it can be, seems stange that the generator light is not on when its only giving me 8 volts ?? thats not right surely ?

thanks for your ideas so far :thumb

worth swapping the voltage regulator if you have irregular volts ??

cheers steve just done it and makes no difference

i think ill have to get a van and take it to someone who knows , im fed up with it and just want it working . trouble is im sure i must have done something as its only happened since i was renewing the headstock bearings and painting parts.

Might be worth checking that wiring around
ignition switch, seeing as you moved/disturbed
things to remove headstock etc.
But I appreciate your frustration!
