I've just paid my due's to become a subscriber. I'm after panniers for the new steed, and have been scouring through different sections of the forum.

I can't seem to find a list of manufacturer's on this forum anywhere. Is there such a thing available.

Is there a Pannier review available, telling of the pro's and con's of different makes.

Would like to buy British made ones if possible.............. Feel a bit guilty buying a German bike when there is a British alternative.

But hey ho.....................

Sorry for all the questions.................... This new model seems very new on the accessories front.

Hi Gargy

I have been researching the same issue and it is down to price and personal preference. Ebay has the varios panniers(2013) for £600 think Bmw are similar price some folk do not rate them (leaking hinge problems). Having looked at all the the available panniers out there. I plummed for the Globe scout 35 litre pannier set as they have a narrow profile and look a quality build at a cost of £780 (awaiting delivery) i aim to post a video on the site for all to see. The Nomada ProII Holan came in a bit cheaper but the lids hit the rear grab rail and did not look as well built to me. I do not like the other panniers that waste the space above the exhaust. I am sure there will be lots of peps with their own views on this subject.

Good hunting, Mark

I think you need to ask yourself how often you intend to use your panniers and why?

If they are just to increase the bike's undoubted 'presence', being ridden around empty, getting tarnished and acting as an air brake, then BMW's will be fine. They used to have a problem with leaks and the top box being impossible to open at higher than average altitudes. The air pressure problem was solved by BMW by fitting a small release valve, so that is a thing of the past. The leaks are maybe cured, I don't know. I cured mine on my vanilla GSA by drilling a smal hole in each box at the lowest point when the bike was sat on its sidestand. I also drilled small holes in the handguards to let the water that accumulates there flow away too. Drilling the holes in the panniers also cured the air pressure problem, saving me complaining to BMW (and anyone who might be bored enough to listen) that they had sold me a premium priced product that was unfit for purpose and a rip-off.

If you are heading off around the world, the standard panniers will probably still do, too. But there are (or will be) lots of alternatives from bespoke made to measure (including by Tossers on UKGSer) to assorted off-the- shelf offerings from assorted manufacturers. Whose is best? Nobody has a definitive answer any more than one helmet or tyre is really the pig's figs.

Have a look around, see what you fancy, not least how easy they are to take off and put back on again. That is if you ever intend to take them off at all.

Wapping, I hear what you are saying.............. I'll go out for a 3 hour blast, and go away for a weekend camping. I will also do two weeks around Europe, so I need one set to do the lot, especially if the missus decides to come with me. So it got to be around 35 ltr panniers, plus a top box that will hold two helmets............. (Hard to come by from what I can make of it).

I would like a manufacturer who has developed a set of panniers that utilise the bikes pannier fixings, so that when they are removed the bike doesn't look like the scaffolders have been in.

Maybe I should of asked........... Which panniers should I avoid ?

My search continues..................

Givi 55Ltr top box will hold 2 helmets. Also a good size for using if you don't want to have the panniers on for a shorter trip on your own.

Givi 55Ltr on my avatar picture.

Teamleader........ My thoughts on the wasted space on the exhaust side are the same as yours. Would just like to know how you found out the Holan panniers hit the grab rail....... Is it hearsay, or fact ?

Tried Googling Globescout................ Not a lot of joy. Any chance of a link please.

Cheers.

Holan Panniers fit the new LC GS perfectly, from what I have seen.

I'd go for them

Al

What about Verns??? Does he do them for the WC yet?? :nenau:nenau

The Vario panniers and Givi top box on my 2005 hexhead are just fine for all this above.

Don't bother putting two helmets into a top box. Just get a simple cable lock and anchor them to the bike. Worried by rain, lob a plastic bag over them.

The more space (literage) you've got, the more guff you'll fill it up with. For what you've in mind, BMW's panniers will be fine.

Your Googling is as successful as your rugby team in the Aviva this season.....

PS Found by Googling: Globe scout panniers. I had no idea if Globe scout was one word or two, but guessed that it probably wouldn't make too much difference, Google bein' real clever'n'all. Loads of links popped up, staring with some on AdvRider and UBoob videos. Scroll down a bit... Bingo! A TwitFace link... And Bingo again, buried therein the Hun's website address to click on.

Back on track...

From the same question asked in 2006, where the answer proabably hasn't changed much other than through inflation....

No such thing as wrong kit - just what you prefer...

Mark,

Nadeem is partly correct.

IMO what you need to determine is whether your needs are best served by side or top loading panniers.

Once you've sorted that out, it's price, practicality, durabilty, and looks (the last being very subjective).

See if you can get to see the various systems fitted before you choose, have a good look at frames, fitting and security (in terms of mountings and contents).

There's plenty of opinions about the merits of different systems on this forum, some people have tried several versions, whatever is fitted to their bike is what most will say is the best.

Not an easy choice but have fun looking.

Off course MikeP missed one important factor how deep is your pocket. You can have ally from £416 up to roughly a grand.

But the rest of what Mike said is prefectly true.

PS Anyone seen Nadeem?

the Globe Scouts are pretty good. They deserve a look when you're going to be shopping for your panniers.

that said , the GSLC looks very good pannierless and the rear scaffolding doesn't detract from the general appearance.

I have a set of Holan Nomada 38 litre panniers for sale. They are cut around the exhaust for the slimmest width, less than the handle bars. The frame is s/steel in silver and the box's are painted black to prevent marking.

In unmarked condition with Venture Shield protection on the lids to prevent scuffing.

Ping me at [email protected] if interested.

I think you can see from the photo that the lid is very close to the grab rail. I also posted an item about a topbox a Kappa 53 ltr which will accomadate 2 helmets. from italy at £105 the givi 55 ltr item retails at £300. p.s the Globe scout say that the frame is quick release so should be easy to put on and off.

Votes to date:

BMW Vario (passing mention)

Globescout

Givi monster top-box.... But no help on panniers

Holan

Ardcase

Vern's (not sure if he makes them yet) Well, if not, somebody has to be first

Another Vario and Givi top-box combo

TT Zega pro

.... Oh and a tip that BMW's standard offering will probably do.

Other than that, lots of pictures and a bloke who can't work Google.

Early days but an encouraging list.

I reckon the Varios are pretty damned good. The top-box is now significantly bigger than previous incarnations, but still only accommodates one full face lid, sorry don't know volume values old and new. The left pannier will take a lid too.

Unlike others I haven't had any water issues (touching wood!) and with the liner bags from my old 09 GS they form a great system for my sort of holidaying: arrive at overnight stop, inner bags out, riding kit in, lock - job done.

And when you don't need them you've got a nice uncluttered bike to ride, well as uncluttered as a cluttered GS can look, elegant it ain't!
