Hi everyone,

I'm seriously considering a GSA but was wondering about luggage options for them. To keep the price down I've not spec'd any luggage yet and was wondering is it more cost effective to get it at purchase time from BMW or is there a good selection from other suppliers?

What sort of cost am I going to add for a full set from BMW versus a 3rd party afterwards?

I'm looking for a good size top box (take a full face helmet) and matching panniers (40l ish).

Thanks

Steve

go for the OE BMW Adventure luggage. The panniers are big and easy to get on and off.I mainly use the top box which is a good size as well.costs about a grand all in IIRC .Metal mules etc are good but even dearer .:thumb

Luggage gsa

I agree the oem luggage is well designed, stands up well in a minor drop, and is very secure -easy to remove,I managed to negotiate a good discount at time of purchase.

OEM 1200GSA luggage costs are approx as follows inc vat but before any discount:

Left and right hand panniers £240 each
Top case £247
Top case carrier and mountings £77
Lock set £50

At least that's what my invoice said! I managed to get what I thought was a reasonable discount when I bought the set with the bike. Top box comfortably takes my full-face lid.

I give them a :thumb2

my bike was speced with premium pack and dynamic pack, asked dealer what he could do with the price of the boxes he gave me the boxes at what it cost him £800 and gave discount of £300 on the bike. this wasnt a one off as he did the same deal for my mate aswell (cooper bmw sunderland) plus it is all done before you pick up your bike so it is less hastle. you could try looking about for used ones if you can find any?

I had BMW alloy panniers on my 12ADV and was not impressed!

Sure they came off easily and carried a lot of gear, but show signs of corrosion at the first hint of salt or even heavy rain.

I saw a 12ADV parked in Spain about a month ago with H & B Gobi panniers (they look very similar to the ones on a KTM ADV...might even be the same ones) and I thought they looked the dogs do-dahs on the GS and cheaper than BM.

Just my opinion.

I've got an '08' GSA with vario panniers. No corrosion to worry about, there verastile (coz they expand) they leave virtually nothing on the bike in the way of brackets when your not using them AND they look the part (Well I would say that !) :D

By the way a mate of mine picked his bike up before making up his mind which 'boxes' to put on. Then got a price to put vario's on, bad choice, much more expensive and ended up with STD ally boxes. :blast

The Gobis are the same as those used on KTM's, H&B just brand them with the KTM logo.

They are very rugged panniers, the only "down side" is the double skin construction reduces the carrying capacity, however you can add an optional tap to the panniers and use the cavities as a water container.

Steve

I've just bought the BMW aluminium pannier set after days pondering on these or the touratech aluminium ones.

Eventually i went for the BMW ones, after a price increase from Touratech and some discount from my BMW dealer.

I think that these are fine, and although expensive, worth the money. True you could get a set for 500 quid, but IMHO the mounting system on the BMW versions is the best of the lot, and even look well unloaded. I've toured 6000 miles this summer with camping gear and they performed their job without drama. True that just means sitting there not falling off, but i like em.

I also really like the fact that they are keyed with the ignition key.

For info, the full pannier will take my XL Arai Tour X.

would be nice to have some pics, as a newbie here all i see are names and prices flung around! pics with specs would be nice!

There is a whole thread called "Show us your panniers". Full selection of options with full photos.
