Have decided to splash out on a new GS this year, the only thing I have an issue with is the luggage options.
I'd like the aluminium panniers, and I like the features of the Zega Pro's, and can afford the GSA if it turns out to be necessary to buy one in order to have them, but I don't think I'll get away with the GSA's size and weight (especially fully loaded and fuelled)
I know there are other options in custom made cases but some of the Trunks out there just don't fit my idea of a setup suitable for 'lightweight' travel.
I don't like the Vario panniers, despite them giving a form fitting appearance (ie both sides appear to be the same width and there's no odd sized gap on the exhaust side) i don't think I can go away from top loading panniers like I currently have (Hepco Becker Explorers) I'd like to keep the panniers as small as possible and evenly matched (I was going to go for an oilhead and get some underseat exhausts made like the Fallert system so I could have two same sized slim panniers)
I wouldn't mind the Touratech Zega 'Special's like they made for the oil cooled/left hand exhaust model but can't see the same setup for the waterhead/right hand exhaust models in their current catalogue.
I have found this picture on Touratech's website
384e054c5e.jpg
which appears to have the 'Special' system fitted to it (notice the cutout for the exhaust in the RHS pannier) but it is of the 2014 Adventure model.
Question is, if Touratech DO bring out a 'Special' version of their Zegas for the 2014, will the frame fit on a standard GS, or is there some difference between the GSA and the GS that will prevent them fitting on the GS? I thought the frames and rear subframes were the same on the 2014 model GS/GSA?
Another question is.. are they likely to make them and market them anytime soon?

The frames are the same on the GS and GSA, but the rear footpegs are different. If the TT panniers are designed to fit with the GSA footpegs, and you get a GS, you'll need to change these as well.

I went with Varios, as I don't use them often enough to warrant having the scaffolding on the bike 24/7, and like the way they expand. But I HATE the side loading mechanism, and would prefer top loading panniers.

Ride your bike more, spending less time looking at it.

You'll worry less about the aesthetics of the scaffolding. Not least as you can't see it whilst you are sat on the bike, enjoying the awesome forward progress you are making.

Less is more, dear boy.:rob Most trips away only warrant the use of the BMW small softbag. I don't need luggage mounted to the bike 24/7 to have a good time.:D

The panniers in that picture are the original 2014 BMW ADV panniers. Not the Touratech Zega's.

Ah but full on, around the world luggage, says something about you, even if you never leave the county never mind the country.
Thing is it says different things to different people!

I don't need panniers every day, just for the occasional trip, don't like the soft luggage option purely from the security point, had kit stolen a few years ago while on a trip by having the bags simply slashed. So hard luggage it is,But what panniers, the choice is all but endless, for me this time I went for the vario bmw ones, cheap(under £500 including the coded locks), not offensive to look at, fit without the need for extra mounts, on my bike anyway. one key for the bike and panniers, plus the expanding function is useful, maybe not the best on the market but as previously mentioned on here its a personal choice and for me these do what I need.

The thinking man's choice:thumby:

I use a 40 litre waterproof roll bag. £100 and easily takes enough stuff for a trip abroad. Never had a security issue over 1000s of miles of touring. Who want to nick your underpants FFS ? Take pictures with your Iphone.

Get some Mane Event inner bags and then you can leave the Varios on the bike and just take the bags to and from the hotel room (or wherever) and the then side-loading is not an issue. And the bags are a damned sight easier/lighter to carry too

Nope not my undies, but camp stove, gas bottle and cooking bits and bobs, while not massively expensive a real pain in the arse, plus of course the big hole in the bag that needed stitching back together, then bin bags to make it waterproof again, not a massive problem on a weekend away, but partway through a 6 week trip, it was a problem I didn't need.

I've got the BMW inner bags, but they are a pain, as I have to jump up and down on them to get them to fit back in the panniers!

I have a couple of smaller bags, the BMW small softbag, and some Touratwat thingamajig. Whenever I go away, I always try and get as much as I can into the smallest piece of luggage, as less is more.:D

TT zega pros for me,great for when your going away and the frames on the bike don't bother me.

As an aside if you really want to be versatile you can buy 1 TT zega pro in all 3 available sizes and use which ever combination your trip requires. :thumb2

Globescout??

Just posted this on the Watercooled forum. I did take a waterproof Out board bag with me on the first trip. See photo below or look at my panniers on utube

Take less shite with you, you'll not have the problem.

Feck me, you have more bags than Imelda Marcos had shoes.

I use the SW Motech Evo system with Trax panniers. The panniers are ridiculously huge but I only attach them a few times a year for big trips with SWMBO, I just use a top box for daily commute, etc.

The Evo racks come apart so there is very little extra metal on your bike when you are not using the panniers, but its a 5 min job to clip the side carriers on and snap on the panniers when you feel the call of the wild :D

I remember taking the Santander ferry with the GF a while back and we shared that 40 litre bag between us.

One of those rufty tufty types on a fully loaded 'Man sized' GSA was was unpacking his shiny three piece alloy luggage set and one of the cases was stuffed full of coat hangers - says it all really
