When touring, pack a bit of fresh air too - a good tip I was given over 20 years ago and has always stood me in good stead over the years

For a weekend away solo, in accommodation you should be able to get it all in a tankbag

I went with a lad, in the early 90's to the Bol D'or in the south of France - he was on a Ducati 900 and had a small tankbag for the week's trip

Nothing else, at all - he was a master of minimalist, but he coped fine

I'm going back to taking less and less

I know one on here, that has got a 12GSA WC on order and he's just going with a tankbag and topbox only, this time around - panniers he feels are unnecessary if you're staying in hotels

I remember taking the Santander ferry with the GF a while back and we shared that 40 litre bag between us.

One of those rufty tufty types on a fully loaded 'Man sized' GSA was was unpacking his shiny three piece alloy luggage set and one of the cases was stuffed full of coat hangers - says it all really

So did you ask him why he had a pannier full of coat hangers?

Was he going to a wedding and had his suit in the other pannier

Obviously with a pannier full of coat hangers he was not carrying much stuff. -perhaps less than you take on you trips

Absolutely. I'm planning on taking as little as possible on all my trips this year. Might have another top speed run on the Autobahn, without panniers this time. Reckon I should get 150 on the gps!

I had the system cases on the 1150 but found they had an adverse effect on the bikes handling around hairpins so avoid hard luggage of any description these days. I imagine a top box would be even worse? I did swap the rear rack for the GSA version with a TT plate as I find this easier to strap the bag onto and the GF prefers the grab handles.

I have never found that on my 1150, if my wife comes with me when we take groups out I find that having wound up the preload there is very little difference in the bikes handling. And we have a lot of hairpins here! The same with the topbox, a huge Givi item, with or without it feels OK. I almost always have the topbox on as leading rideouts means carrying extra stuff. When we ride two up I put the panniers on so we can stick all our gear in them when we stop somewhere. I don't get much chance these days to ride long distance or a high speeds but we have in the past cruised at 110 mph with full luggage and no problems.

Oh to be so disciplined.............I travelled with someone who did this last year, top box tank bag and one of those little tool box things hung on the pannier frame, a place for everything and everything in it's place, impressive on a 10 day trip

Did that on the way back from the Pyrenees in 2007, but I think my Garmin 2610 was lying - a K1200S won't quite manage 178mph, especially with panniers and topbox attached

I find a topbox screws up the handling on any bike with a sporty riding position (VFR800, K1200S), especially without a pillion as it moves the centre of gravity too gin and too far back. My GS and RT don't seem near as badly affected though. Panniers put the weight in a much better place

Locks on the 2013-14 new Vario panniers.
On the older system you could readily buy 2nd hand and change locks internals to suit your bike's key.
Is this the same with these newer versions?
