Unfortunately we can’t simply remove the rear seats and ride solo on the new GS/GSA like we could on the previous ones because it leaves an unfinished opening. If you wish to do so BMW offers a luggage plate kit for $170. I think it is required fitment with the rally seat.
I purchased the kit when I bought my GSA and just got around to putting it on. I must say it’s nicely made, it consists of a rigid black plastic base which is securely bolted to where the grab handles were then a matching silver plastic cover with a tip-up access door which attaches to the base. It’s not difficult to put on but it took me maybe an hour so unfortunately it’s not something that just snaps on and off. As I only ride this bike solo I like being able to place my tail bag right behind my seat and the fact it sets lower than if on top of the passenger seat makes it a little easier to swing my leg over. Anyway I thought I’d share a couple pics.

Thanks for the pics and advice as been looking at one :thumby:
Is that a lift up lid thingy or a back rest

It's just a lid. Wouldn't do much for a backrest as there's no seat there. :D The part number is 77448523742.

Your quite welcome. The little storage compartment under the rear seat is enlarged a little with this set-up. Still not much room but enough for the owners manual and a small tool pouch with the tools that the rear seat would normally hold.
This is probably not going to be for anyone who occasionally carries a passenger but for me it does allow a small tail bag to rest there and sit a few inches lower than it does on top of the rear seat which makes it easier to swing my leg over.

Hey Clifton - this looks great; a good find from the non-existent GSA accessories catalogue. Any chance of a side profile pic of the whole bike with this rear lid thing closed?

Ta !

My pleasure.

With a tail bag. Actually this is an old Kawasaki KLR tail bag which has turned out to be very useful on this bike for times when I don’t need the panniers.

I had the panniers sprayed with a thin coat of pick-up truck bed liner (Linex) which came out pretty nice I think. They charged $100 for both panniers and lids which included priming the aluminum with a bonding coat. Actually it was less than I’d have paid for a set of liners.

That's a neat idea, it will be interesting to see how well it sticks to the ali over time. I guess it will also make the boxes a bit quieter on the bike, not that they seem especially noisy

I had this done on my last bike and it was fine for the two years I had it so I hope it stays on ok. It prevents objects (tent, clothing, etc) from blackening from being in contact with the bare aluminum. Also since they're lined I feel better better tossing hard objects such as tools, bottle of bourbon, etc. directly in w/o wrapping them.

I was interested in one of these till you told me it took an hour to fit! Sod that...I need to take mine on and off.

Digging up an old thread; do you have to assemble this on the bike, or can you put most of it together off the bike, then put it on/ take it off as and when you need it?

I've since sold it but I as recall you pretty much have to install it completely each time. It does go much quicker after the first time though.

I have this setup. With the rear seat removed and the top box mounted in its place. Looks neat. And the padded back rest helps. But many fellow UK GSEr's commented that the bike looks stubby. But as I now carry a disc lock, and a lock and heavy chain and I ride solo. This is the best set up as it does not upset the dynamics of the bike by making the back end heavy.
