Luggage Rack Torx Size

Hi,

I've just bought a Givi SR 689 Top Box mounting kit which requires removal of the OEM luggage rack. I've got a set of Torx screwdrivers but the T30 doesn't seem to quite fit the screws used on the luggage rack. The T30 seems a bit slack and can move within the screw head so it feels like it will slip easily. Are the Torx screws used on the rack funnily sized to prevent the rack being removed? Its not my screwdriver which is oddly sized either - the toolkit T30 is the same.

Am I missing something?

Mine is T30. You're right it is a tad loose but I think that just because the heads are not very deep. Gan canny.

Does a T35 fit?

Normally with Torx the next size down will fit but is loose.

I managed to get them out today. The T30 nicely fitted all the screws on the tail except for the three holding the luggage rack which were all a slack fit. The two on the sides weren't too bad and I could apply a reasonable force before the screwdriver started to slip, but the vertical one was so loose that it was hopeless even attempting to unscrew it. As it was, I couldn't get any of them to move with the screwdriver.

In the end I found a T30 bit in an electric screwdriver set of bits which had been in the garage for a few years and was consequently a bit rusty. This actually helped make the bit a tighter fit. The electric screwdriver along wouldn't undo them though as they were so tight. I had to use the driver until it reached max torque and stopped, then rotate the screwdriver until they started to move - I don't know why they were so tight, but all's well...

Have just actuially ordered the SR689 rack and was looking at the three TORX bolts to remove. Quick question - are the nuts fixed on the bottom side (maybe welded on a tang) making the removal of the luggage rack straightforward, or do I have to start removing other bits on the underside of the bike to hold on to the nut for each bolt ?

It's really easy to remove, just the three Torx screws. The nuts are part of the subframe so don't come out and are re-used with the Givi rack. Takes about an hour to fit.

Did you try a T35?
