anyone got one?

currently have givi 48ltr top box and system panniers, this isnt enough space for me and a mate who will be riding pillion for 3 months touring around USA, can you get enough stuff in zega panniers for 2 people? or is a trailer the other option? they're roughly the same price (for a cheap trailer that is)

Ooh I like the Oddleg one. It's quirky enough to be very appealing. Now what possible rationale could I use to convince SWMBO that I need one....? Maybe I could attach a dog kennel to it.......:o
 
You could try the trailers from MotoGoodies. They look pretty nice, and are available in either 110 litre of 200 litre sizes. Downside is that they are pretty dear (1850 to 2350 euros), so if you are of a Yorkshire persuasion, you may find them less attractive.

On the other hand, with my standard Touratech Zega set (76 litres), plus my Givi E460 top box (46 litres), plus my Bagster tankbag (15-25 litres), plus two tank panniers (military ammo bags, I believe, about 10 litres each), that's nearly 170 litres of luggage I can carry. Plus myself, and my darling wife. So the danger is more of overloading the bike than anything else.

But the best tip for travelling is to take as little as possible with you, only take multi-purpose clothes, and wash often. An example: We go hill walking on holiday, but we don't take a separate coat. Instead, we use the inner gore tex liners of our jackets (BMW Savanna and Spidi Netstep).
 
I have seen this one, made out of a welded frame and a car roof box, it was no wider than the bike.

UNIGO Trailers ...

Hi ...

There is a real good single wheel trailers manufactured by UNIGO of New-Zealand. Although at the moment production has been stopped as it is being moved to the US. You can check the website and get more details www.uni-go.com.

The thing i don't like about the MotoGoodies is that the luggage compartment is too high up and would compromise stability.

However, the UNIGO IMHO has a smaller wheel, which would not do so well on rough roads. I guess we're looking for something of a cross between these two. :) ...

Your problem isn't the space you have available, it's the stuff you're trying to pack into it.

Seriously, many many people have gone RTW two up for months or years with that space, and you're going to a country where you can pick up anything you need on the way.....

Not trying to take the piss or anything, but I reckon you ought to be looking at what you're packing, not what to pack it in.
 
I was too polite to want to mention it, but Fanum is absolutely right. For 3 months, you need 5 days clothing each, a tent and cooking gear. And you can dispense with the tent and cooking gear if you stay in hotels / motels. So the minimum luggage you could get away with is a large tankbag (enough for a couple of shirts, pants and socks, mobile, wallet and digital camera). Now, you may feel you need a few more bits and pieces, but a set of ally panniers, a decent sized topbox and a tankbag should be plenty.
 
thanks for all the info and links guys, point taken about travelling light by fanum and Kropotkin, those uni-go trailers do look great, but i think i'll go down the ally pannier route.

With 60ltres on either side (estimated, vernatech Worldbeaters) and a 47ltr Givi on top, everything can be stashed away neatly.....and you can fit more without the top box .
 
Towed a Trailer behind the Gs...

What I learned with a couple of thousand ks of Touring with a Trailer. Facts !
I don't like how you have to ride with such a Narrow line. At the Lights you Stop on the oil. When you stop on Grass or on softer ground. The trailer pushes the Bike down hill... My Gs 1100 only liked 4th gear to match a Safe speed. No not lack of power? The surgeing through the Transmission. We all know about the 1100 Trany ...so I look after mine.
Oh yes and on my K100 I lost Streeing while overtaking!! Because the Trailer was not Loaded even. I can do Monos ( but I never do, Officer/ RaceBike) so I corrected it.
So what do I do now... leave all the Crap at Home. Only Take Less than you need! There are shops there you know. Please I don't mean to offend all the Happy Trailer Towers. It is what I found. that's all? BIGJim Tasmania.:nenau
 
Luggage

I recently completed a five plus month trip from Alaska to Argentina using TT panniers , givi top box and a tank bag. Tank bag mostly used for the map and papers for border crossings toll etc. One pannier was full of spares the other clothing half of which was not used!. But we did go through huge climate changes from the Artic circle to the tropics, used a heated jacket in the cold bits (saved several under garments) but usually three tee shirts one on one in the wash and a spare pair of shoes I brought a pair of trainers in Wal Mart for £9.00 still going strong and comfortable. So sort out all your essentials, then throw half of them away the states is not outer mongolia and clothing is cheap and available every where so don't take much with you.
If you have not got enough just buy somthing.
Meantime just enjoy it but you won't need a trailer, several people on our trip were two up butr no one had a trailer!".
