A quick turnaround at home, to drop off my wobbly box and then off to Normandy on Thursday. Assuming that is, that Porsche East London have put my car back together, in their hunt to find why it thinks the roof is on, when the roof is most definitely off.

Hey ho, a first world problem indeed.

Is that the ‘summer’ Porsche? 😂

It is. Only good for winter, when the roof is on and the electronics don’t get all confused about a nonexistent roof.

There is a problem affecting lots of the model, particularly in the US. Porsche, Germany are struggling to find a fix, which might suggest it’s software related. Hey ho, first world.

Is it still drivable with that fault ?

Yes.

Thankfully the vehicle doesn’t go into limp mode.

The annoying thing (other than the message being totally erroneous) is that you can’t clear it on the move. It also obscures the dial where all the other ‘information’ about the car is displayed, so you can’t see it. Thankfully the analogue speedo and rev counter are not affected.

The only ‘fix’ seems to be to stop, turn off the engine, lock the car and wait for 30 seconds. Then unlock and restart. The warning message should then clear itself. It doesn’t though stop it reappearing at some point later.

There is a lot on the Rennsport (US) forum about it, simply as I guess a Spyder with its roof off is more common in Florida / Texas / Arizona / California than it is in Walsall. My friend also has the same model; his does it too, now.

The vehicle went back to Porsche East London on 23 March, since when they have been trying to find a fix. This has involved lots of correspondence with Porsche, Germany who haven’t (as yet) come up with something that works permanently. Switches, locks, wiring and relays have all been changed. They thought they’d mended it but then (on a final test drive) it came back. The strong suspicion now is that it’s a software glitch, which might / will be a sod to trace and fixable only from Porsche, Germany via a software patch. Or it’s a hardware problem or a possible combination of software and hardware.

Other than that…. 500 bhp from a GT3,m engine, shoehorned into a lightened Boxster chassis and mated to a very slick PDK auto-box, ain’t all bad. Very much a first world problem.

I remember Top Gear ran a race at a disused Spanish airport of who could get to the finish line first, but by activating the roof ‘up’ mode. I think Richard had a Ferrari 458i which meant it could not move until up. The Audi driven by May could creep along. However bafoon Clarkson in a McLaren forgot about the limit and nailed it when he thought the roof was engaged. How it didn't rip off I’ll never know. :D

I do hope it's repaired for Cochem.
I have a list with ladies wanting to have a ride with you. :augie

So do I!

The latest news is that the car now has temporary wiring through the cabin, as they try to find whether there is a break in the original wiring loom somewhere. They offered to leave the temporary wiring in place, whilst I took it to France for a week on Wednesday. I declined, as it would only mean a week when no work was done on the vehicle.

Update on the RS Spyder woes. The top mechanic here at Porsche East London, has come back from Germany, where the issue was ‘discussed’ as nobody knows why the fault is happening in Europe and America.

The temporary wiring he’s installed does seem to have fixed it….. but….. as it was intermittent, they’ll only know after more road tests. Another week…..

I bet he's got a new bird, once the weather breaks he'll give it back.
