Mac Book Pro... why?

i read about the support ending somewhere, seems it isn't the case.

anyhoo, i've now got a 2012 13" base model MBP, which, for me, is a nicer machine in most respects :)

i think apple are phasing out the optical drives for a couple of reasons: to make the machines slimmer, and more importantly to them, so you buy the content previously on disc from apple.

my MBP has a dvd drive, but i've very rarely used it. my iMac drive gets fairly regular use, and can be used as a Remote Disc

apple were the first to remove floppy drives from their machines too. there was a fuss then, but everyone followed suit shortly after.

I am tearing my hair out in frustration, because I've been very bad at research and purchased a Macbook Pro two days before release of the new model. I am trying to tell myself that I really do meed a dvd drive (which I really don't) and also telling myself that my mac 15" anti reflection display is fabulous, which it is.
Anyhow, this macbook works fabulously well and suffers no wifi loss, which my previous model suffered continually.
What;s more, I am really chuffed because I am running Parallels for about £60, which is the dogs dangles and allows me to run all of my old win doze programmes (I refuse to call them apps) AT THE SAME TIME as mac osx. These can run in a separate virtual window and so far have no noticeable speed implications whatsoever on my core i7. The windoze programmes also integrate with osx so that they have access to ready installed peripherals such as printers.

Why are you tearing your hair out? Apple do a no questions asked refund within 14 days of purchase, regardless of whether it was bought mail order or in store. Take it back, get a refund and buy the latest...

exactly, although unless you really need USB3 i'm not sure it's worth bothering about :nenau

incidentally...don't want to make you feel worse, but Parallels is part of the current macupdate bundle for $49.99 which comes with a couple of other useful apps :augie

Thanks Cookie, I now feel really good about walking into a mac store and being ripped off :blast
Schtum, I posted that same repair link yesterday, trying to make myself feel better:thumb
Say to myself, "Don't buy a new model of anything" but I am now on my way back to the mac store to have a butchers.

i do like apple, but they're the last people i'd buy any software from unless it was their own or in the app store. i believe they are phasing out selling boxed software soon in the stores.

you can still take the MBP back and get a new one. it really is a no questions ask return, i've done it myself.

Retina MBP gets a glowing review here and there's talk of a 13" version in the autumn.

2012 MBP
+ve: Highest resolution display of any laptop (Retina version)
Lighter than predecessor
More RAM
Faster processors and USB2
HDMI output
Not burdened by need to carry an optical drive
-ve: Bloody expensive when spec is high, but the spec is very high
Base model has a 'small' 256Gb SSD and I'd want to know if it can be upgraded later
Retina display makes most current websites and icons look rough
No optical drive and still heavier that Macbook Air
Different charger than previous models
Possibly impossible to repair or upgrade !!***!!??
Websites and software need upgrading to benefit from the display
No track record
How hot will it run when it is so thin?

John Lewis are running out the 'old' 13" MBP for 849GBP, down from 999GBP and with a 2 year warranty...........until June 30th

Ivy bridge chipset should run cooler than my "old" sandy bridge, that I reckon I could poach my gonads sometimes.

i thought you did, but i might have been misled.

No you don't need a apple drive to work on the laptops, I have a samsung drive and it works fine only thing is it needs 2 usb outlets and the apple drive only needs 1 so if your tight for free usb outlets then you may be best to stick with the apple drive. I have both for this reason :blast

Then you chose poorly... dear oh dear....

Thanks for being captain obvious :thumb

I use the mac drive for my mac air and the samsung for when i have my pc full with hard drives and no free sata points on the mother board so it worked out well..
