Help! My clock has gone berserk - it has somehow morphed from normal time this morning (0700) to 2200 but the seconds are running continuously like a stopwatch.

I haven't removed the battery - what's happening - should I get a priest?!

Cheers

Rob

rubber on the button is dozed and water has got in

Probably best to tap lightly and see if you can dislodge water then coat button bit with vaseline and hope fer best

If you're up for it you can take it off the bike and split it and carefully dry with a hair dryer (LOW heat) or leave in the hotpress for a couple of days

and seal butons some way

clock, what clock ?

Sorry for butting in like this but while you guys are on the subject of clocks, mine is on 00.00 when I put the ignition on & just times how long the ignition is turned on (length of ride) then when the ignition is turned back on it's at 00.00 again. What's all that about ??? Any ideas guys. Cheers, Rick.

Duff battery.

Starting takes so much out of the battery that the clock resets to zero. Chances are that if it's doing this the battery is toast - you may well have a new battery in your future... If you have ABS you may also be experiencing problems getting it to initialise.

Worth trying a charger first though.

From experience Batteries tend not to die overnight.. you'll start off by getting the occasional ABS fail to engage.. then as time goes by.. the clock will start to reset.. then.. sometimes months later.. the starter will be a tad 'lethargic'.

I'm at the point where the clock is occasionally resetting... despite the fact the optimate is showing 'green'.

I'll be looking to replace the battery after christmas.. current one is a cheapo lead acid VARTA - now 4 years old.

After Christmas I'll be going back to an Exide OEM Gel.

Sooner if I start getting 'starter' problems... no sign of that as yet though. :thumb

Check Fuse #3 as well.

Another vote for fuse 3 here, I blew mine last week playing with my new multimeter:blast the clock behaved exactly as you say. I lost my indicators too.

Speaking of blown fuses, I tried to charge my friend's 650 DR battery using my started bike, through the wires from the socket on the starter cover motor. Meanwhile he has tried to start his bike, and that resulting in my blown socket fuse. And then I measured the voltage drop, and my voltmeter indicated 5,5V. Is that normal or do I have a short-circuit somewhere in the loom?

Thanks,
Dan

I saw that caused by corrosion on the connector behind the socket, they are permanently live so benefit from the occasional clean and squirt with something.

I agree with corrosion, but is this normal (~ 5V) when the fuse is taken out or burnt??

Thanks to all for your posts -

I have just fitted spot lamps and everything (except the clock) seems fine. Haven't checked the fuses yet - could it be a fuse gone?

Got a Gel battery fitted and indicators are fine.

The clock just sits at 2200 and the seconds counter goes from 0 to 59 permanently!

Cheers

Are the spot lamps HID's?

No - don't think so...

I think they are Ring lamps procured from How Much on this forum. Bloody brilliant too!

Ah, you'd know if they were HID's as you'd have had to find somewhere to locate the ballast units. The reason I ask is that HID ballasts are known to cause issues with the RID if they're located too close.

Failing that, if the clock started missbehaving after you'd fitted the spots then I'd retrace your 'spot fitting' steps and check for wiring faults / disturbances (especially earth's)
