I had a rather nasty accident at work 12 days ago which resulted in my right hand going through rollers and crushing my thumb and forefinger. Fortunately, I was taken to Morriston Hospital where the decision to amputate was turned around to reconstruct. I had 4 days in the High Dependency Unit in the Burns & Plastics Ward following 2 ops of 4 hours and 8 hours and a further 6 days in isolation. I have had 2 days out this weekend and go back in tonight. Anyway, I have lost part of my right thumb and had massive reconstructive surgery and skin grafts. My hand is now "different" to the other one of the pair and I can't see me getting a glove on it when I do eventually get to ride my bike again, (and I will!). Now to the question: Anyone here had any experince of made-to-measure gloves? I think BKS Leather may do this, but I would like to hear of anyone who has any experience of this. Thanks :beerjug:

Bloody hell that must have been scary.

One suggestion is to take a very simply constructed glove like the Aerostich Elkskin Ropers, turn them inside out to expose the seams and then reshape/restitch. It should be a pretty straight forward procedure and you still end up with one of the toughest gloves on the market.

Ooooh bad luck mate.
Yes BKS do made to measure gloves (expensive) and many years ago Hideout leathers did made to measure gloves as well. It might be worth calling and pouring out your tale of woe to both companies.

I've had gloves made at BKS and yes, they are savage expensive but really good quality. After years of abuse they needed some small repairs doing so I took them to 9 Lives in Guilford for fixing. They did a good job and may also be worth asking about making a pair from scratch or altering your existing glove.

Hope the hand fixes soon.

There speaks a true biker - almost lost a hand and what is his concern......how am I going to ride my bike. No idea about hand made gloves, but a bid you a speedy recovery!

Thanks for your replies and your good wishes for my recovery. I have just been discharged from hospital, so now begins the physio and a couple more ops. I may have a bikeless summer, but I will be back on the bike ASAP! I'll try and post some pics of the post-op hand and arm under "Show us your scars....!" Definitely not for the squeamish, but much less gory than the pre-op pics the docs took!!!! Typing is a bit of a bugger with one finger on my left hand! BTW, I hope to be at the local GS meet at Abercrave on the 9th. June. :beerjug:

Get well soon

Hope the recovery goes well, and you're back on the GS soon.

All the very best

Gary
