The clocks i know,
but is the gearing different?
is the quality better or worse?
It seems the F model holds it's value better!

The G650GS has a slightly smaller fuel tank and a different engine with slightly less power although you wouldn't really notice as its only around 2 bhp and now 48bhp and the G' is a wee bit lighter than the old F' model..........Not sure about the gearing but there isn't that much difference in top speed but that's not so relevent on a bike that will cruise comfortably at 65-70mph.
The G650GS does have better fuel economy from a slightly smaller 14 litre tank and usually does 65-80mpg depending on how you ride it.
Some folk say that the finish isn't as good as the old F' bike but a good covering of ACF50 should stop the main corrosion problems on the engine casings especially around the water pump although I think the new engine has a much better paint finish.
As for holding its value the G650GS could be bought new for £4995 earlier this year whereas the original F650GS was nearly £7000 in 2007 when they were discontinued.
Most of the parts are interchangeable below the 'new' instruments and 'tank' panels and the wheels on the G650GS Sertao are the same as the Dakar whereas the standard G650GS has alloy wheels and tubeless tyres with a larger 140 rear tyre.
The G650GS had a hot start issue caused by a faulty automatic decrompression lever which was changed by BMW for a new one and this caused a lot of bad press for the bike and a lady in America had a broken fork leg which cased some concern but other than that they seem pretty reliable and for a bike that costs around one third of the price of a R1200GS adventure it certainly isn't a third of the bike..............!
