Main output seal from Engine (behind clutch)

Watch when you get your bits - the two o-rings are similar (one larger though - the flywheel, the oil pump is slightly smaller section I'd rung Motorworks before I took stuff apart) but I marked mine so as to prevent confusion in the heat of the moment!)

Once I have some 'classic' oil I'll find out if it's all oil tight - I hope so

Far too long in garage over w/e...I'm definatley a bit slow and careful :P so now is time for a pint. I'll stick another couple of tips on in near future.

So I'm just getting ready for a week in Scotland on the rebuilt bike and I take it for a shakedown run. No sign of any leak under gearbox - phew, time yet, but it's pissing out at gaiter on shaft connection.

Could there be any reason other than the gearbox output seal?

The gearbox hasn't been run since a rebuild (not by me) so shouldn't be leaking..but I'm not sure what else it could be?

Peeling back the gaiter there appears to be very small bits of a green/blue material - part of output seal? How could this be? maybe if seal wasn't seated? Or seated deeply enough? Could it be anything else?

it was drip dripping onto collector box after just 30kms

Hols off, and looks like so too is gearbox :(

Did you put the dab of silicone sealer on the little V up at the top of the seal apperture?

Hey Fritz,

I have a R80 here available if you want to do your week in Scotland, you can then get back to the bike after a break,
It's just been sorted for me to do the bank holiday weekend, in fort William, but I can always take my breva 1100 or Fazer 1000,

I have just upgraded the brakes to twin discs, but this is the bike

Let me know if your interested!

I did - and them wondered if perhaps I shouldn't have, but assume that's not the prob as the bolt through speed has still got it's hole and is venting so should allow pressure build up?

that is avery kind offer my friend - we have the use of the car so guess we'll do that - but was looking forward to shaking down the bike.

I really appreciat the thought - and a nice bike that is, loved my R80/7 and look forward to using it again in future (no where near on the road at present) nice straight forward mechanics (obviously no difference on box tho' - just been mighty unlucky with this one)

Not read all of your thread but did you drain off all the old/leaked oil from inside the shaft....maybe it is just that coming up the shaft ?

I'd remove the lower gaitor clamp and drain off all the oil from inside the shaft ( spray some brake cleaner from the top gaitor? ) and then try again and see if still 'leaking'

Aye Kenny she were dry to start with.
Wanted box to get a once over and was fitting an oil-proof plate etc while on.
So basically it was drier to start with than it is now :-(
At least it'll come apart and go back together quicker - and I can spy around clutch and see if the new seal is!
Just a pisser it has occured now

So, back apart yet again.

Yes the output seal leaking, no obvious reason, but clear fresh oil (only 30km) and about 100ml of it. :(

Looks like I'm out on subs :blast, so no pics - you'll have to teach yeselves then :P

Back to builder for box (another days travel and another day putting it back together again), meanwhile a right fanny on to clean out housing etc and then re-align the bloody shaft :blagblah

And I was going to show you a picture of the Dermant (RIP) shaft - tough
