Main stand refurbishment

For my 1200 GSA I purchased the 1250 GSA plastic centre stand protector for the Rallye model from BMW (IIRC it wasn't that expensive). Painted the stand prior to fitting (with nylon ties), no further issues whatsoever.

I happened across that quite by accident on the Bhanstormer online parts ordering page, £35 as I recall. I shall probably get one ordered so it's ready to fit as soon as I get it painted. Good to know it's been successful :thumb2

Instruction says do 3 / 4 coats 15 minutes drying time between

I did 4 coats or maybe 5 in one day leaving an hour between but it was touch dry as quick as it says

Left it overnight before refitting the sidestand

Although not in direct line for stones like the centrestand, it has stood up well to use over 7 months and remains unmarked

Thanks for that. This'll be the way I go, sounds ideal.

Top tip

Warm the can up and shake it like fook....then shake it some more

Clean nozzle after each application - Might be an egg sucking tip but I found out the hard way

I got a new one under warranty due to the rust and have taken better care of the new one with the plastic cover from a Rallye, 3M clear tape and ACF 50.

You’d think they’d work out that if they have to replace them under warranty it might be better if they put a stone-chip-resistant cover on…

I put a bit of black Gorilla tape on the centre stand cross bar, seems to be working well.

I had mine powder coated a couple of years ago and put a lizzard skin on the cross bar and it's still like new.
What's 'lizard skin'? Sounds interesting!

I reported my rusting stand to my dealer when the bike was less than 6 months old. They told me it was “fair wear and tear” and was not covered by the BMW warranty.

Sent my stand to Cymarc to be altered, can now be locked upright, then they powder coat.
