Maintenance Plan Change

The LC bikes were advertised as being equipped with a maintenance free driveshaft which proved to be false and the shaft proved to be prone to failure thus the new maintenance plan and the free driveshaft policy. The R1300GS bikes have the shaft maintenance as part of the plan and it provides for regular replacement but at owner's expense but longer intervals.
No vehicle has a "maintenance free shaft". I think that few believed what they said. UJs on the shafts will be wear items and from lots of data, BMW themselves know that UJ's can fail much over 60K miles. Some bikes have done more than double that (rare) without a shaft change but once tolerances are exceeded they're best replaced.

I have been into he BMW dealership today. i took my bike in there last Friday for replacement Cardan shaft. Later on Friday the dealership called to say they had tested the bike on a high speed test and all was fine. but at this point had not looked at the shaft or splines, thy did put in a drain under the casing. My bike has done 58k Km. when i hit 60K i will be in southern Spain. So today i went to the dealer asking for them to reconsider, i am awaiting a call from the dealer who is contacting BMW to ask if they can replace!!! watch this space. thank you again for all your comments. Regards Ken (ongoing)

Yes all i ask is as the recall states, Replacement shaft. to give confidence and peace of mind. cheers

who pays for the lifetime " free driveshaft " .
really who pays ? you all know the answer.
does it mean you can still be independent of the dealer , and rock-up when the mileage is done , and get your shaft changed for free?

how come my 1150 never had all these problems ?

BMW really do seem to have lost their way as a " quality vehicle " .

Had a few BMWs previously, 1100 RT, 1200 GS all those had ABS problems, im not always a very trusting toward Main dealers, But once they have you on the cardan shaft issues they have you for life. is it the price we have to pay for peace of mind or a plan by dealerships, who knows.
Do i sound cynical? i hope not.

yes, see my post above about a chap with an RS. He has done his own servicing over 40,000 miles. Recently had a new shaft, no questions asked.

at least they are addressing the matter but, yes, they do seem prone to monumental fuck ups

Wanted to let you know the news of my GSA, she now has a new Cardan shaft fitted, I had to push a little but its now all done, thank you for your contributions, they were all useful when going in this morning to ask them to change the shaft as per the recall letter. Result
