Hi there I'm new to the site and only now getting used to using it and then the mobile site on taptalk finding that a little harder to use, but I'm sure ill get there !
I'm after some advice as I have an 04 gs that has been a fantastic bike and other than changing the crank sensor and fuel switch all has been good and do all servicing myself and enjoy doing so which leads me into my new dilemma ?
I've just purchased an 06 bike with a small amount of accident damaged from a reputable dealer via flea bay with the intension of getting back on the road asap, my questions are many so please bear with me the bike come without the lock set, clocks, cdi unit etc
Just wondering if anyone has experience of fitting an updated wiring loom newer clock\speedo locks etc maybe from an 09\10 just before the bike swapped over to the tc engine version and at the same time I have purchased the adventure tank etc so ive seem plenty of info on swapping it over just want to smarten up the bike with newer items while its in the garage stripped down ready for repair ?
any advice would be really appreciated
forgot to add my main concern is the abs system would that work with the newer wiring loom and newer control unit etc as I believe the abs system was changed through out the life of the 1200 ?
many thanks

Welcome to the mad house Sparkieboy29, and what an interesting opening puzzle you have set to the collective minds.
Doubtless someone else will be along shortly to add confusion to the situation - do you still own both an 04 and an 06? Are you intending to keep both?
My take is based upon having owned three different BMW`s, including an 05 1200.
The ABS changed from a powered servo in 04-06 to something else in 07 and is a notorious problem area if its fitted.
My suggestion is this: as you have asked the question its unlikely that you have the chance to fully compare side by side both your planned project and the 09/10 versions side by side. The Easiest course of action is to simply build it as intended ie if its an 06 then build it as such.
But what do I know??

Yep at the moment keeping the two bikes but the idea is to sell my older bike as the damaged one has done less than 6 k it was a demo bike from a dealer and is missing various parts due to being stuck in the corner of there yard for over 6 years and used for a few parts but have been given the full service sheets and the initial parts that were needed to repair which to be honest is not a lot ! But since it's been parked up they have basically stripped the clocks and all electronic modules hence starting from scratch.
The newer parts are available from a breakers yard but don't want to spend a large about of money on them if they are not compatible on the 06 bike and as I said I've read various issues with the abs system and how it's changed etc.
Again any help in solving the above problem would be helpful and also need a few parts if anyone has them I'll draft a list up today if anyone has any parts at a reasonable price
Cheers

My 2p worth. I think you would be opening a can of worms by trying to upgrade to a later model bits and pieces. If you are finding problems with the servo abs I would ditch it and just do a servoectomy. It's well documented on here. There is a pile of knowledge on this site and people are willing to help. Motorworks are a good source of parts and are very helpful with advice. Good luck with it. JJH

Cheers jjh as far as I'm aware the abs is in good working order just the matching up of new to old could be/ probably be a big stumbling block just thought I'd throw it out here for discussion before purchasing the control units key ignition etc

Ok Ive read your post again. You have a 04 gs working nothing wrong with it. You now have a 06 bike with abs and from what I can see you want to fix up some accident damage and upgrade the bike and go some of the way to making a gsa while you are at it. Your bike is a servo abs model and I would not try to up grade that. A lot of what you want to do is of a suck and see type. Some things will work some won't. During the model life span things were changed even engine parts. I know this because I had to get new engine cases on my 06 rt and as the rebuild went on it was found some things would not fit because they had been changed and up graded. That caught out a main dealer Ho had access to all the information they needed. To get real advice from a expert hewould have to have the bike in front of him and be told exactly what was proposed. For instance the gsa tank is not a straight swap and needs other parts as well. I would advise caution. Then again it's people like yourself who are prepared to go to great lengths to bring a project like that to a suscessfull result who make this site interesting. If it was me I'd sell all and use the money to buy a gsa. Good luck. JJH

After reading so much about swapping over the electronics etc and people swapping out older abs units for newer ones on older bikes I'm taking the plunge and buying newer and give it a go worst case I'll have to sell it on

Does anyone know if the fuel pump and gauge from the 1200 gs will fit and read the fuel level in an adventure tank obvious the adventure tank is larger etc
