Hi chaps,

I have just taken delivery of my new Keihan downpipes for the Bumble. the previous owner fitted a stainless Y-piece to the standard front pipes, and as the standard front pipes are a smaller diameter the slotted ends of the Y-piece have been compressed to make them fit.

I now need to open these slotted ends in order for the new downpipes to fit. Has anyone got any ideas of the best way to do this? I have begun to use pliers to try to open things up but it looks like this could end in tears with badly bent bits.

Any assistance or advice, as usual, gratefully received. I was really hoping to get this old girl on the road again in coming weeks. :blast

Thanks,

Matt

IIWY I'd try and get a round mandrel made from wood / plastic that gradually increases the diameter from old to new, cone shaped IYSWIM. Then bash / press it as required.

OR from the UK at a lot cheaper postage :D:D

Looks like one of those tools that would be really useful for about 10 minutes then would sit in the top of my garage for the next 30 years.

Seems a lot easier than carving a piece of wood, though. Nothing seems straightforward with this bike. I have never felt so dejected about the list of little niggles that become bigger and more annoying the more effort I put in.

Sounds like you need some new headers as well, and while you're at it, a new silencer as well

I have new keihan headers, and they are what I am trying to fit to the y-piece fitted by the previous owner. It just looks like the y-piece has been severely clamped to match the smaller diameter of the original headers.

I guess I will have to get hold of one of those exhaust expander thingies, then ebay it again after I have used it. I may try some wood carving first, though, as that could be good therapy. :thumb

I have new keihan headers

Misread that you had a Keihan y-piece :blast

I'm not sure who made my headers and y-piece, but at least they all fit together nicely. Out of interest, what is the outside daimeter of the pipe on the y-piece, that goes to the silencer?

I will have a measure when I get home and retrieve the y-piece from the back of the garage where it was flung yesterday evening. :rob

Thanks :) I've a y-piece that doesn't have the Keihan dimples in IYSWIM for the engine mount bolts. Thinking of getting a different exhaust so it'll be good to see if my y-piece has a "standard" / "usual" diameter.

BTW cleaned my headers / y-piece up using wonder wheels and scotchbrite followed by Peeks polish and wire wool. Look a lot shinier, could see the crack I mentioned in an earlier thread too. Just need to refit them all on and get them going brown again. Should new sealing rings be used on the headers each disturbance?

He meanz look for de Chavs in de Saxo wiv de 6" zorst, ask de mon were im get it and thats the biz cos im the main man :thumb2

Bearing in mind I live in Essex, you will not be surprised that my neighbour's son has a Peugeot 206 with huge alloys, blacked out windows and a rather fruity exhaust. :ymca

I will have to try some of Proff's chav-speak to impress him. :blagblah

Y fronts

I think you will find that the slotted ends were compressed because the cylindrical soft metal gaskets were missing. You can get them from motoworks/bins. U need 3
Cheers

Matt,

Before you go mad buying suspect tools, take the 'Y' piece to your local exhaust supplyer. Many of them will have a roller tool/machine specifically for the job you want done. They should be able to reshape the 'Y' piece to it's original, or slightly bigger size.

That 'tool' is IMO a bit Micky Mouse. Force stretching a tube from the inside is the best and easiest way to split it. Tubes should be rolled, not stretched.

An easier option still is to sell the 'Y' piece and buy the one that fits the down pipes or vice versa :nenau

Have a good day tomorrow :ChrisKelly
