When I have planned a route and go to drag it into the zummo the message comes up that different maps have been used and do I want to recalibrate my route, if I tick yes is does a recalibration but its different to my original
In map display at the top of the basecamp screen (2nd TOOLBAR ) map display window shows # City Navigator Europe NT 2013.3 # When zummo 660 is plugged onto PC the window in basecamp map display changes to # City Navigator Europe NT 2014.40 # Surely the maps in the zummo and basecamp on the PC should be the same.
Basecamp has the latest update 4.2.5 :nenau

Just because you have downloadd the latest map update (2014.40) to your Zumo, does not mean that you have 2014.40 maps on/in Basecamp.

You have 2 options:

a) Connect your Zumo to your computer and when you open Bascamp go to the drop-down menu and select the 2014.40 maps which will show. You can then create routes in basecamp with the same maps as you have on yoru Zumo and you will not get the "recalculate" prompt.
Note that as soon as you disconnect your Zumo from your computer, that you will only be offered the latest version of maps that actually reside in your computer which, from what you write, would seem to be 2013.3

b) if that is a hassle, then you need to download the latest version of maps to your computer. Then, you can open Basecamp and create routes without having to first connect your Zumo.

It's not a software update!

What's happened is that the map on your GPS device is different to the map on your computer.

Your device has map version Europe NT 2014.40

Whilst your computer is running Europe NT 2013.3

You simply have to make them the same.

Connect your device to your computer.

Launch Garmin Express

When prompted, click.... Update map on computer only, or something like that. The option may lurk in 'Advanced' or something similar, I forget.

Sit back for a couple of hours

Delete old map versions from computer.

Next time there is a full map update, click the option that says.... 'Install on device AND computer'

What are the preferences set on your Zumo? Are they different to those on Basecamp?

The Zumo will try to recalculate the route to suit the preferences you have told it you want to use.

There is I am afraid a lot of nonsense talked on here about problems caused by different map versions. The fact is unless the versions differ greatly, ie a very old map with roads missing on the unit then in reality there is no problem. Sometimes a waypoint might appear slightly off the road so you might get an instruction to turn left for 10 metres before continuing on but that is about all. Leaving ones brain connected usually sorts these little problems out.

I download maybe 10 routes a day all summer on average, with the number of updates now it is more likely than not that the map version I have used is different from that on the guests unit. The only problems I have encountered are were preferences on the unit clash with those on my route. I now routinely check and reset preferences (often guests have no idea what they are!) before loading routes. If this is not done the only way I can ensure that the route stays as intended is to use a large number of waypoints to ensure that the unit must follow the roads intended. Not a good solution as the bloody things keep telling people that they are arriving at yet another waypoint.

Only real issues are with using, as I do on my bike, openstreetmaps. I always have an openstreetmap version as well as a Garmin version as there can be real differences in the mapping leading to a waypoint not being on the correct road.

Obviously I can't tell if this is your problem but just wanted to point out that map versions are not a real issue.

Hi Paul, base camp is saying no software updates available - at the moment version 4.2.5 is on PC

If it does not offer an update click on reinstall maps, click advanced & choose the device & PC option. This is using Garmin Express software. I think Garmin Mapinstaller has a similar technique.

Many of the routing and route calculation problems encountered in the GPS section revolve around different maps being run on a computer and on a GPS device, just as the OP described.

He is getting a clear message that the route was created on a different map, making recalculation advisable.

The latest mapset differs significantly from past incarnations. Once he has the maps the same on the device and on his computer, the problem will go away and it won't matter what preferences he has set on his device, as no initial recalculation will take place.

Using BaseCamp on a Mac is quite handy as it draws the mapset from the device, ensuring that they are the same. But it requires the device to be connected each time to do so. Updating the maps so that the device and the computer's maps match, saves connecting the device each time. It's just best practice and doesn't take long when both maps are updated together.

How do you delete the old map from computer. I assume it is located in a file somewhere but how do you know which one.

If there are multiple Garmin map products installed on the computer, individual map products can be uninstalled to free up hard drive space.

Garmin map products can be removed through the standard Windows uninstall. Each mapping product and version will be listed.

Windows XP, Vista, 7 & 8:

On the Keyboard, press the Windows Key + R key together
In the text box, type Control Panel
Click OK
Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program (Category View)
Right click on the mapping product to uninstall
Click Uninstall
Removing Garmin map products from a Mac can be done by using the Garmin MapManager.

Mac:

In the Applications folder, open Garmin MapManager
Click the map product to uninstall
In the lower left corner, click the gear icon
Click Delete map
In the pop-up window, click Delete
Once all steps are completed, the products will be uninstalled from the computer.

It's not the product I need to remove but the old map update from basecamp.

As above, which is spot on.

One tip.... In your enthusias, DO NOT DELETE the base map, or you'll lose BaseCamp / Mapsource entirely. If you do, don't worry just reinstall it. Better if you don't though, particularly if you don't gave all your past routes saved somewhere.

PS When he says 'map product' he means each individual version of the map loaded onto your computer. Just a bit of mild confusion over terminology.

Give it a go. Just follow the instructions carefully and all will be well.

Map updates are incorporated into the installed maps You shouldn't need to remove them.

You can only remove old maps that you don't want or use anymore.

Thanks for advice on my query , followed your instructions and like you said GARMIN EXPRESS > REINSTALL MAPS > then click on ADVANCED to open up another window with 3 options, still took 2 attempts for the download to complete but all ok now, didn't that advanced option used to be an open box a couple of years back ??
I went onto the PCs uninstall section with the aim of removing the earlier Basecamp maps and it also removed Basecamp even though it sits as its own program so had to reinstall that and the reinstall put back in the old maps, Europe 2013 ??
but I can live with that , at least all my mapping is now from the same hymn sheet.
Thanks for the other guys that replied.
