Here and there.....
I have today finally managed to install europe maps 2014.? update.
I have installed onto the SD card of my 550 zumo.
My question is, when I connect the 550 to basecamp, it shows the 550, the internal memory of the 550 shows euro maps 2010. I have had to install onto the SD card as the internal memory was full. Will the 550 automatically go to the new install or should I be removing the old maps and if so how do I do that?

Make sure you have ticked the 2014 map on your device in "map details". Your device will then use this map even though it is on the sd card. Also basecamp should recognise that's the one your using but make sure that 2014 is selected on basecamp in maps at top of toolbar.

A couple of comments:

a) When you update your maps from Garmin Express, you should click on the "Advanced Options" selection. This will open a screen that gives you the option to load the update to the device, the device and computer, or the computer. If you click the "device and computer' you will get the maps both on your Zumo and also on your computer (in Basecamp)

b) Having done that, disconnect the Zumo, and then open Basecamp. Select the Maps button at the top and ensure that the latest maps are 'ticked'

c) Start up your Zumo and check in the myMaps screen that the latest map update is showing and is ticked.

d) Having done that, you do not need to connect the Zumo to the computer when planning routes on Basecamp.

e) When you have finished your routes, connect your Zumo and transfer them to the device and you will not get that message warning you that the routes were created using a different version of the maps and asking if you want to recalculate.

BTW, the latest version of the maps is 2015.10 :-)

Depends which GPS you have. Some users, myself included, can only see 2014.40 in Garmin Express, states that 'maps are up to date'. Are there are any Zumo 660 users that have updates to 2015.10 installed or showing in Garmin Express? I have heard of Zumo 350 users that have 2015.10 but not 660 users yet.

Academic for me as I'm off on tour on Tuesday and there's no way that I'll be updating so soon before departure.

As to the OP's question: It sounds like the older mapping is still installed on your internal memory. You can remove that, if it bothers you, by deleting GMAPPROM.IMG and any other files called GMAPPROM.* (different extension) from the internal memory. These should be in the Garmin folder off of the root. Back these up to your PC beforehand though. Admittedly a slow process with the 550 as it's USB 1. If you are on a Mac empty the trash before disconnecting the GPS from the computer otherwise the files will still be there.

Garmin Express cannot send data to an SD card in a 550. Garmin MapUpdater will need to be used instead.

We have had three guests through so far this summer who say they have been told to buy a card and use Garmin Express to update maps to their 550 devices. None have worked, it would appear that you just end up with a random part of the new mapping. None of them say that Garmin mentioned using Map updater. Someone at Garmin UK is not up to speed on this, I know these are old devices now but they should be able to give correct advice.

I'm afraid you take pot luck ringing Garmin. They told one guy his 660 wouldn't work with BaseCamp even though he's used it since it was launched. The 550 issue with SD cards needing MapUpdater is on their help pages although it lists the 660 as being the same which it's not.

Although it becomes a two stage process download full Europe, or your region of choice, to your PC using Garmin Express. Then use MapInstall to write the mapping that you require to the SD card.

Having dug out my Windows XP netbook for a trip I'm starting next week I've discovered that the latest versions of both Garmin Express and Basecamp don't work on that OS. A legacy version of Basecamp is on the Garmin site. For the mapping data I used MapUpdater which did the trick this afternoon updating the mapping on the netbook to 2014.40.

Will get Win7 for the netbook after I get back anyway but had to run with what I had due to time constraints.

Thanks for replies, have done as above.
garmin don't make easy though do they?:blast It seems a reasonable level of psychic ability is required, which I seem to be lacking:confused:

The 2015.10 version is a Unicode NTU map update & wont apply to all countries.

(Unicode version can display cyrillic and some other languages characters and signs (like greek, polish, latvian etc)

Don't know if this helps but the only way I can install the whole of Europe maps is to use Garmin Express to load said map to Base camp then use map install to load from Base Camp to 8gb sd card in device I.e my Zumo 550. This is the only trouble free way I've found. The device then reads map of sd card.
