Does anyone know if maps downloaded from my Mapsource v8 on to a C/F card and then inserted and on someone else's 2610 can be read?

I'm not sure if the maps are linked in some way to the specific 2610 unit. A friend of mine is having trouble downloading his maps to his 2610 and has asked me to download mine to a C/F card and send it to him.

Thanks guys! :thumb

I sent a 2 gig card with euro V8 to a mate in Italy on holiday. It would not work in his 2610.

Once unlocked the maps are tied to a specific GPS unit, it is possible, however, to obtain a second unlock code for a second unit free of charge. Legally, within the terms of the licence, this is also meant to be owned by you.

Interesting! I went to my mate's house on Saturday with my C/F card in hand loaded with the maps of the UK from my 2610. Inserted the card in his unit and it loaded them all up first time .....:beerjug:

He's got his own legit version of Mapsource v8 but is having trouble downloading them to his 2610. Once he's overcome his problem he'll be able to downoad his own map base to his unit and (hopefully) mine will be automatically overwritten.

Interesting... What I wrote is how I understand it works and had also read elsewhere. I thought Garmin had a pretty solid copy protection method in place. Would like to hear comments on this either way.

Then you already had his unlock codes on your PC

i think garmin CP works between the PC and the GPS unit. ie. the mapping on the PC must be registered to a particular gps or the PC will not recognise it.

So are you saying that so long as the PC writing to the CF card has a legit unlocked copy of City Nav. then you can write to as many cards and distribute these amongst as many Garmin owners as you desire :nenau All very much against the licence and not something that I would condone mind you...

I can't believe that they went to all the trouble of doing any copy protection if that's the case. I think there must be something that we're missing here?
