I've just had to re-update my Garmin lifetime software, everything went to the usual routine, about three hours, but the maps are not showing? I tried sending all info back to the computer from the 550, but only the waypoints and a selected route were showing as lines, no maps.

Unfortunately the telephone help is off at weekends, so going on holiday, I'll be using the 550s maps.

Nothing on the PC at all, can't tell on the 550 as it was only updated a few days ago on the last download.

I had the same problem recently on the 660.

If your map update uses the new Garmin map updater, then as you go through the update process, when you get an "Advanced" button in the bottom left of the screen, select it. It will give you options for updating the GPS, both GPS and PC, and PC only.
If you've run the map updater for the GPS only (which is default) then plug the GPS into the PC, go to "MyGarmin"as usual, go through the map update process again, and this time select "PC only" from the "Advanced" menu, which will then update Mapsource.
If you have Lifetime Maps this won't be a problem; if you haven't, others have had success in speaking to Garmin to get the download unlocked for a second go. Once the update is complete, the new map can be selected in Mapsource from the drop down box, top left.

There's more about this in the 660 forum, and I'm assuming the map updater (which I hadn't seen before last weekend when I updated) is common to both 660 and 550. If not, then apologies and ignore the above.

That's it, it's called something like options I think, anyway that's got it on.

Next problem, lack of detail, even on highest settings, none of the minor roads seem to be on show. My street and surrounding area are just blank, with only the nearby main roads showing. It was fine before, down to street level

To answer my own question :)

In 'view' the basic map view wasn't checked (I'd thought of that) but when I checked and unchecked it a few times, all was as it should be.

Oh well, computers eh? Don't you just love em?
