I thought there were just "waypoints" and "via points" - well it appears that there are also "map points"
If you, for example, "find a nearest place" and then use it as the start point of a route you may have some headscratching to do when you have sent it "to device"
Opening this route on my Quest the map page reverts to the last fix or known position and I am invited to invoke a lengthy recalculation - presumably to route from this fix onto the selected route
The moral of the story seems to be ......... in Mapsource, first convert this starting map point into a hard waypoint (right click - new waypoint) and the map page on your device will then centre on, and start from, this location
