My wife has just got a Garmin Nuvi1490T for her car and I have been thinking about getting a Zumo.

However, I'd like to use Mapsource but there wasn't an installation disk with the Nuvi. Do I have to buy it separately? I've seen that it costs about £129 which adds a fair bit to the cost of the Zumo.

Is it easily available?

Sorry for the fairly dumb question but I actually like OS Maps and this is my first foray in to GPS (Luddite!)

Thanks, Nemo. :thumb:thumb:thumb

Garmin GPS receivers come packaged with free MapSource application.

Garmin officially provides a MapSource version update download, which will only work if there is previous version of MapSource installed. If no MapSource software is detected, the MapSource update setup will abort with error message saying that it cannot find previous version of MapSource. Follow the following trick to hack the setup file so that it can be used to install MapSource clean and fresh without any prior installation of MapSource.

I Googled this link, use at your own peril.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Mr K and The Beer Hunter,

I connected the device to the PC and eventually found the download on the website. It downloaded the .exe for free and it seems to be working OK.

I must say that everything I read had said I needed a DVD but if this works OK then I won't argue. Many thanks for your input.

I'm off to read all the stickys now.

The 1490T does not come with a mapsource DVD as you know now.. but the Zumo does....it will work with both your GPS's ie waypoints, tracks with the 1490T....waypoints, tracks & routes with the Zumo. The only problem is that the maps in Mapsource will only be registered with the Zumo unit. As the maps are already preloaded on both GPS units you can plan your routes & waypoints etc on Mapsource and send or download to/from Mapsource with either GPS unit.

If and when you update mapping in the future you will only be able to do it with the Zumo registered mapsource.

Having three GPS units myself I get around this by having the lifetime mapping update for the Zumo and sometimes buy the latest mapping on an Garmin map SD card which will work in the other GPS units. What this means is that I always have the latest mapping on the PC & Zumo and the Garmin map SD card compliments this on the other GPS units without having to buy updates for each separate unit.

It's not easy

I never knew this GPS malarkey was so complicated:):):):)

Thanks for the tips.
