Marrakesh red r1150gs

Decided to fit a BMW sat nav cradle and will be adding spot lights and aftermarket heated grips so using the space left under the tank where ABS pump is fitted on other models I have roughed out a 3mm alloy plare to mount a secondary fuse box which will be fed by a switched relay so it is live with ignition.

Once finished I will paint the plate satin black
Hope you don’t need to change a fuse when out on the road!

Drained the oil should say sludge out of the fork legs and replaced it with the correct amount of fork oil, also stripped the old paint off the lower fork bridge ,etched primed it and a coat of Hammerite Silver Smoothrite, the telelever has also been rubbed down ready for a repaint , still considering putting on a late model R1150R or Rockster telelever

Talk about mission creep , so far the simple front cover swap has cost a new seal for the casing , new oil filter , 4 litres of oil , a tube of proper casing sealant , new rubber boot for the telelever ball joint , I've had to turn up two spacers for the front top shock mounts (the original rubber ones had rotted ).
Then of course the telelever lower bridge had to be taken back to bare metal and repainted and the telelever arm ended up being stripped down and resprayed ,add some extra new stainless fittings because I am not putting back on the manky originals .
So including the front cover which I got early last year cost is has cost at least £130 , SO FAR !

Just for information regarding the lower vall joint rubber boot , ordered one from EBay and as soon as ordered the delivery date was tripled so ended ordering one from Motobins it arrived within 2 days so I could get everything re assembled
Item from Motobins was made by Ariete and very good quality ,pita to fit as it was quite thick and inflexible but once on it looks and feels that it will last another 20 odd years.
E Bay item turned up today and they are shall we say very lightweight and flimsy ( more akin to a rubber boot on a rear brake slave cylinder than a ball joint boot).
I would fit them as an emergency measue but doubt if they would last more than a couple of years

Looks great! Did you use hammerite smooth silver on the telelever arm? That’s a job I’ve got lined up for the very near future….

Yes, but if I do get a rockster or late r1150r telelever for it I will go the powder coating route.
In the past on my old 1150 I used a cellulose based etch primer and aluminium silver paint with a 1K lacquer on GS parts which is much tougher than the new formula Smoothrite which does not seem as long lasting .
I got the colour match silver done at a local place (got a match then they deleted the metallic flake from the mix) which is unfortunately now closed down so struggling to get the paint

Good to know…. I’ve used smoothrite on my cases. Would you advise lacquer (I rely didn’t want a gloss finish though!) or just leave it as is?

I’ve had the frame and aluminium rear ‘rack’ powder coated - might take the telever arm over next based on this

As far as I am aware you cannot use non proprietary lacquer on top of Smoothrite (or at least I have always found in the past that it reacted ) , when I was using 1K lacquer it was a satin finish that I used .
Always found that Hammerite paints can be a bit iffy for reacting even when applying further coatings ( of the same Hammerite paint ) at a later date .
I wouldn't worry if the engine is already done it should last many years without issue .

While going through some of the bits in the loft (mostly from the last time I owned an 1150 in between 2003 and 2011 ) I realised I have the following bits in the garage :-

1. original final drive bevel box from my 1150 ,after it sh*t its bearings in Austria and again when I got home replaced it with a brand new drive unit, paralever and drive shaft bought from E Bay off a company that was building disability trikes using new R1150R's. A local BMW specialist had only just rebuilt it before the trip and the bearings failed after 1000 miles
2. a replacement bevel box and internals that was off a bike with 35,000 miles on the clock bought just in case
3. a bevel box off a 2004 R1150RT , casing was manky but the internals were in good condition
4. a brand new bevel box casing , bought in a sale in a Motobins sale in 2009 for £35

Using my new blind bearing puller all of the bearings are out of the casing units and I intend to give it a go at building up a spare unit into the new casing using the instructions on the R1150GS service CD. I have a large number of shims from the three units although possibly worryingly the original unit didn't contain any shims and the nose of the crown gear where it goes into the small bearing had some suspicious chisel marks on it, were they caused by BMW dealer (rebuilt under warranty at 2500 miles) before I bought it , the BMW specialist who replaced the bearings at 24,000 miles , although probably not the Austrian BMW dealer who mentioned finding the damage when they stripped it down and recommended replacing the crown wheel assembly

Only issue is the price of bearings which seem to have at least tripled since 2010

Another shout out for Motobins ,I ordered some bits on Tuesday morning and they arrived by post this morning , had issues wiith poor delivery times earlier in the year from another specialist so am sticking with Motobins when I can
