While going through some of the bits in the loft (mostly from the last time I owned an 1150 in between 2003 and 2011 ) I realised I have the following bits in the garage :-
1. original final drive bevel box from my 1150 ,after it sh*t its bearings in Austria and again when I got home replaced it with a brand new drive unit, paralever and drive shaft bought from E Bay off a company that was building disability trikes using new R1150R's. A local BMW specialist had only just rebuilt it before the trip and the bearings failed after 1000 miles
2. a replacement bevel box and internals that was off a bike with 35,000 miles on the clock bought just in case
3. a bevel box off a 2004 R1150RT , casing was manky but the internals were in good condition
4. a brand new bevel box casing , bought in a sale in a Motobins sale in 2009 for £35
Using my new blind bearing puller all of the bearings are out of the casing units and I intend to give it a go at building up a spare unit into the new casing using the instructions on the R1150GS service CD. I have a large number of shims from the three units although possibly worryingly the original unit didn't contain any shims and the nose of the crown gear where it goes into the small bearing had some suspicious chisel marks on it, were they caused by BMW dealer (rebuilt under warranty at 2500 miles) before I bought it , the BMW specialist who replaced the bearings at 24,000 miles , although probably not the Austrian BMW dealer who mentioned finding the damage when they stripped it down and recommended replacing the crown wheel assembly
Only issue is the price of bearings which seem to have at least tripled since 2010
